    60

An ultra-Orthodox Jewish man throws a television screen into a garbage receptacle during a protest against what the religious demonstrators say is the broadcasting of immoral content by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, outside one of the broadcaster's studios in Jerusalem December 6, 2011. REUTERS/Baz Ratner Jerusalem – A public ceremony to rid off household television screens was held today under the direction of Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak.

The rabbi opened the ceremony to protest against the incitement of Charedim in the media, and then began the ritual of smashing hundreds of television sets into big trash bins, in front of the Israeli Broadcasting Authorities offices in Jerusalem.

Very weird. He might mean ehrlich but this comes across as a very silly way to do Kiruv. For some reason, this whole demonstration seems to be a bit to aggressive. On the other hand, maybe to his specific crowd this is the way the way to reach out to them. Thoughts?

Here we have the perfect solution to protests against using live chickens for kapparot. Swing a television over you’re head, then schect it. A win-win all around.

I didn’t see a single LCD or plasma TV…only old obsolete CRTs.
Obviously, this is only for show.

Now they will finally buy flat screens. This reminds me of the gun buy back program where the guns don’t work but you get 200.00 for your garbage. very nice photo op!

@4 & 5- correct, there wasn’t one tv in there that was produced in the past 15 years. Time for an upgrade!

I saw quite a few flatscreens in the piles. First of all, disposing of electronics in this fashion is downright dangerous. That is why there are special places for disposal of unwanted computers, tvs, etc. Secondly, they could have performed 2 mitzvot (if disposing of a tv is a mitzvah by them) by donating the newer ones to hospitals, old folks homes and agencies that deal with new arrivals to the country. There are plenty of Arabs and Christians living in poverty that would love to have a tv. I guess this group is too self centered to think of others. I thought that thinking of others was an important tenet of Judaism.

it reminds me of the famous quote by the german heine regarding censorship

When books are burned in the end people will be burned too.

Darn, in california they add an $8 fee for new computers & tvs for disposal.
Could have saved $8 & look holy at the same time

    His achieved his goal.
    1. Drew attention (broadcasting studio as well as all folks) of biased reporting.
    2. Made people aware that it is better not to watch tv.
    Rabbi Amnon, keep it up!

I’m looking forward till we have the massive “child molester” throwing. Then there will be something of substance. The most ironic part about this is that they are doing this not because of TV being bad for your neshoma, but because of the bad press that the Chareidem have gotten lately.

I would be impressed if the Yidden were throwing out fairly new computers, blackberrys, and smart phones. Seeing 30 year old obsolete tv’s and computer monitors being thrown out is a Purim Spiel.

I guess this is “thinking outside the box”? Anyway, if only it was as easy as throwing out a TV or two. Life is a bit more complex than that.

The flatscreen shown in the second picture from top is an older, obsolete model, it has a reflective screen.

“It was the Televesion that stoped Hitler from taking the world, and kill more Jews”

What? I thought it was the Allied armies that did that? Not to mention that television was not commercialized until after WWII.

I don’t see a single flat panel there (lots of flat screens though). Flat PANELS are what ppl are buying today.
I do see many computer monitors though, which… aren’t TVs…

Plenty of goyim realize that TV is garbage, too. I’ll bet even the galochim that were spat on realize it and can support at least this thing that yidden do, if not the other thing.

To the foolish Jews who make fun of Rabbi Yizchak, you should be ashamed of yourselves. He is a Torah leader with thousands of followers, and has worked his whole Rabbinical career to bring Jews back to their Father in Heaven. “With the advent of the footsteps of Mashiach, insolence will increase… the face of the generation will be like the face of a dog, a son will not feel ashamed before his father.” Rabbis who learn and teach Torah are not objects of scorn, and. television in America and in Israel, in case you haven’t noticed , broadcasts lies, gossip, lashon hara, cruelty , violence and immodest behavior- hardly suitable fare for Jewish neshamot. A great many of the people throwing out their old TVs after listening to the Rabbi’s lectures realize this. Many, at the same time, also make a commitment to become Shomrei Shabbes and learn Torah. So dear Jews, instead of laughing at others it is time to get serious and
think about doing tshuvah, and apologizing to Rabbi Amnon Yizchak in this forum which you used to write lashon hara against him and against Jews living in Eretz Yisroel.

How much is the TV tax at the moment? That translates into a revenue hit for the broadcasters, and a win for the families!

The Rabbonim are far more likely to throw out the REPORTERS of the molestors, than the molestors themselves!!!!! I have witnessed this with my own eyes.

For those seeking to make this project look bad because of a claim that they are simply discarding outdated CRT TV’s, don’t forget that these are not rich Americans who indulge in their creature comforts, but rather working-class immigrant families with very little money to live on, let alone to buy a flat screen.

Looks like the rabbi’s constituents are throwing away their old TVs because they are harder to hide under the bed when neighbors come over for shabbos.

Its amazaing how stupid some people are with their remarks. Its also very sad to see how fiesty and cinical people are when it comes to bow to torah and rabinic advise. What do you expect your kids to grow up to ? Their parents have no respect for torah scholars and rabbanim. Everything is joke and scuffed at. It will come a time when you will terribly regret this kind of action and you will try to turn back the clock with your kids but it will be futile.

You can’t take the mere fact that hundreds have heeded to the rabbis demand and threw away the tv. Well, those guys are not only braver then you, they are also way smarter then you. They put mind over matter whereas you can’t convince yourself to do what’s right out of fear of being laughed at

I just got a report from Israel that no sooner had this staged farce finished, others came and scavenged through the pile of old TV’S in search of ones that were of any value!
