Dublin, Philadelphia – More than 2‚000 congregants walked in groups of nine, three and a half miles from their previous synagogue in Lower Gwynedd to their new home in Upper Dublin – the first brand-new synagogue built in the Philadelphia area in 20 years.
They were nine groups who took their nine torahs, each group carrying one of them from the old ark at the old synagogue to the new one, with a chupah held over the person carrying the torah.
More than half of the total population attended the event.
After all nine torahs arrived, a consecration service was held at synagogue, then they sounded the shofar and the torahs were brought into the sanctuary and placed in the ark. The eternal light was lit and mezuzas were affixed to the doorposts, and the congregation sang.
