Located at 53 Hester Street, Gertel’s has been in business since 1914. Although an e-newsletter from the Lower East Side Tenement Museum warns that Gertel’s will be closing next year, a call to the shop elicited a clarification: “We’re just moving,” but no new location yet.

To 3:00. Gus moved around the corner going north about 1/2 block on Essex. It is under another name like Mr. Pickle. Sterile plastic barrels, yuk! They aren’t the same. I loved them….a tear.

I used to sometimes walk over to the LES on Fridays to buy challahs for Shabbos at Gertel’s when I worked nearby in Lower Manhattan back in the 80s. Sorry to see it go.

Their rugelach rock! I remember when Guss pickles was right across the street in REAL wooden barrels, not like the sterile plastic ones today. Condos over their? It is a narrow smelly block. Well, people need to live in any luch.

Hi. Just as a correction, there will still be two other kosher bakeries
    on the lower east side.
moishes and the east broadway bakery.
Gertels is the only one that bakes on the premises.
(since I am a lower east sider i am keeping you informed)
    thanks
