The board fined three City Council members: Simcha Felder $8,825, Vincent Gentile $1,375, and Rosie Mendez $200. The board also fined Rep. Anthony Weiner $4,900, a former candidate for president of Manhattan, Brian Ellner, $2,100, and a former candidate for the same position, Margarita Lopez, $350.

The board did not complete its hearing on the 2001 campaign of Council Member Miguel Martinez, who would have been ordered to repay $128,786 and face additional penalties had the board determined that he submitted fraudulent documents. [NYSun]

VIN News has confirmed with NYC officials that the NY Sun was wrong in labeling this in their headline as a ‘fraud’. It was an error on part of the SUN staffers, as this is a campaign finance issue and not related to any fraud or money schemes. Acknowledging their mistake, the NY Sun has by now modified its headline.

There was no fraud and the Sun is going to have a pc this Monday saying they made a mistake witgh the headline.

Councilman Felder was fined because he filed late and received contributions more then allowed.

All the money that were contributed over the the allowed amount was returned to the people who contributed the money.

Don’t even compare this to Noach Dears violations.

According to the rules of filing campaign disclosure laws, if you inadvertently omit a contribution or accept a contribution from a non-citizen, etc. or…….make any type of error on your report or not report a contribution correctly…..any or all of these things can happen when you run a campaign and you or your treasurer (who is responsible for compiling and filing your reports) rush to beat the filing deadlines. Sometimes, what is called “fraud” is just a matter of sloppiness or carelesness. Not that fraud doesn’t occur but regulators and bureaucrats sometimes become a bit overzealous.

This is not for fraud, it’s for stuff like paperwork deficiencies, late filings, documentation errors and such.
What Simcha needs is a better secretary!
