Los Alamitos, CA – Mayor Resigns Over White House Watermelon E-mail

Los Alamitos, CA – The mayor of a small Southern California city says he will resign after being criticized for sharing an e-mail picture depicting the White House lawn planted with watermelons under the title “No Easter egg hunt this year.”

Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose issued a statement Thursday saying he is sorry and will step down as mayor at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Grose came under fire for sending the picture to what he called “a small group of friends.” One of the recipients, a local businesswoman and city volunteer, publicly scolded the mayor for his actions.

Grose says he accepts that the e-mail was in poor taste and has affected his ability to lead the city. Grose said he didn’t mean to offend anyone and claimed he was unaware of the racial stereotype linking black people with eating watermelons.

Located in Orange County, Los Alamitos is a 2 1/4-square-mile city of around 12,000 people

      • No. Racist cartoons, whether directed against hook-nosed, money grubben yidden, or stereotyped Afro-Americans are not a joke and hopefully will never be seen as funny or humorous. If you visit Yad Vashem or the Holocaust Museum in D.C., make a point of visiting the archives where they shoe the “cartoons” of yidden from German newspapers in the late 1930’s. I’m sure your parents or grandparents found them funny

      • …No. You’re wrong! Anything that stereotypes is wrong, and shouldn’t be used in conversation! But if it does, there’s a difference whether it’s done within and by members of the same ethnic group. For example, The N—- word. It’s highly offensive and shouldn’t be used by anyone. Yet, I’ve heard many African-Americans, when arguing or joking around using it. But if used by anyone outside the group, it’s the ultimate offense (as it should be.)!!!

    1. Appropiriate. Commenter #1 evidently does not understand what it means when the town governing official shows that he has a tendency against a certain group (and the stupidity to publicize it).

    2. They are prolonging the stereotype by constantly reminding me about, frankly, I think it’s fine to eat whatever you like even if some people think it stereotypes you. Since when is eating watermelon bad? I eat it all the time and most everyone in N.Y.C. eats it especially when it’s summer. So what if black people like it? Who cares? i like it too.
In fact this is a good reminder for people to remember that the black people were treated as slaves and that they developed a taste for watermelon because that was one the best reliefs they could get from the hard work. That would help people not forget the terrible treatment of the blacks.

    3. I am sorry. But, I am certainly no racist. While I DO find that cartoon FUNNY.

What happened to “Sticks and Stones…”
What happened to laughing at one’s own funny stereotypes?

The man had to resign for this foolishness?

      This is scary.

Words and pictures may be strong when used in a hateful way. But we should not curtail humor, even ethnic humor.

      His resignation offends me!

YES YES YES. It is unimagineable that a Government official do this. He can think what he wants but is obligated to be fair to all citizens which is unlikely from such an idiot. We frum New Yorkers are insulated from most overt acts like this so we can not understand the feelings that are involved.

    5. the cartoon family guy (its a perverted fox cartoon made by seth micfarlerline yemach shemo) always makes fun of jews and African Americans in worse ways then this watermelon thing there should be some protest against it

    6. it seems that LATELY everything is being examined by a racist lens and no one is safe from scrutiny. It’s beginning to seem alot like another era not that long ago

    7. Excuse me. Let us learn from the Torah where we are taught NOT TO MAKE FUN OF ANYONE! NOT TO OFFEND OUR NEIGHBORS! “DO NOT DO TO YOUR NEIGHBOR WHAT YOU DONT WANT YOUR NEGHBOR TO DO TO YOU! LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOU LOVE YOURSELVES! When we learn to follow the Torah way, no one will ever GET HURT!!

    8. I dont get it. This mayor resigns, yet the mayor of Washington, Marrion Barry is caught on tape smoking crack with zoinahs, doesnt resign and gets elected to another term.
