Williamsburg, NY – A rumor, and press release [which has no official letterhead from any public Gov. entity] is circulating the Internet over the past few hours regarding the removal of bike lanes on Kent Avenue in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, a hot issue to the neighborhood’s Chasidim, who for decades used Kent for parking and business.

VIN News has confirmed the report to be misleading and some sort of very belated April Fool’s joke.
According to a spokesman from the office of Assemblyman Vito Lopez, who represents a significant part of Williamsburg in Albany, there was no official announcement from his office regarding imminent bike-lane removal. According to Lopez’s office, it’s an ongoing battle in which there is no new development as of today.
Furthermore, an official DOT spokesman, told VIN News on condition of anonymity, “These reports are not accurate as of today”.
While there have been rumors in Williamsburg of ongoing meetings between the city and the community, as of today there is no confirmed settlement on the removal of the bike lanes.

We the residance of Kent ave. Together with Issac Abraham are working on the issue of the Kent ave bike lane for the past 6 months. This week the DOT informed us that they are working on a new proposal which they will announce by the next CB1 meeting which is this coming Wednesday.

This kind of jumping the gun and running with unaproved press releases will have just the upside effect
I’m involved with this issue since the first day…. Here is the list of people and organizations that are helping us from the first day. Yasky’s office, squadrons office, velazquaz’s office, Joseph lentol’s office, Issac Abraham, Leo moskowits, Moty Spitzer, Chaim Wertsberger, gershy Schlesinger,
I don’t understand where Vito Lopez comes into this picture its not his district. Our asemblyman is Joseph lentol.
stupid people care more about their PR then the community, wouldn’t leaking information risk the removal of the bike lanes. They should have waited until the community board meeting. so what’s more important removing the bike lanes or having a photo released right away?
I hope this is not true. the bike lane has made things safer.
Well ! it happened in the past if you get out the news premature some time it can halp put prassure on the Authorities !
In every rumor there’s a little bit of truth..
Let’s hope that this is the begining of the end to these crazy bike lanes!!
Let’s vote out Bloomberg. And vote for Issac Abraham for city council.
Please don’t double park on the bike lanes so the bikers could ride safely
this bike lane is absolutely crazy
i wonder Y they are not enforcing the Helmet rule at my corner in new williamsburg, accidents happen very often, just last week a biker was killed at the corner when running a red light.
#7 ,this on a higher level then just the people you mentioned. This is a issue that has been dealt with the Bloomberg administration with both sides. Rabbi Glanz and Moshe Indig were the reps that were in high level meetings; I’m sure they were talking to their contacts in the community, but they deserve a debt of gratitude from the community for their efforts and they don’t put out any photos for self publicity.
#23 , there is no law requiring helmet use for adults in NYC.
(To # 8, 13, and 14) what pressure was applied to the bloomberg administration to have them review this. Isn’t the change actualy a sign that the administration is paying attention to our community. A request was made from community leaders and a series of meetings have resulted in positive changes. The changes don’t come from anywhere else, we should send a letter of gratitude for listening to our leaders and to the Mayor.
Bike lanes have been installed throughout NYC, not just Williamsburg. If it is an issue in Williamsburg, than it should be an issue all over NYC. Why should the people of Williamsburg get preferential treatment over and above the rest of NYC. Whoever thinks its too crowded there, can move to Kiryas Yoiel.
These lanes make it safer and more possible for Brooklynites to do errands and commute by bike. The more we ride bikes the less we send our dollars over to oil producing nations like Saudi Arabia and Iran. Bike lanes: Good for New York, and good for the Jews. Wake up, folks.
“…a hot issue to the neighborhood’s Chasidim, who for decades used Kent for parking and business. “
What street in New York hasn’t been used to park cars for decades, exactly?
I’m kind of confused here. Why would a Jewish neighborhood prefer to drive cars and send oil money over to such Israel-friendly countries as Iran and Saudi Arabia instead of just riding bicycles to get around? I know this post sounds ignorant and even racist, but somebody please clue me in on the aversion to bicycles.
Isn’t a human life (goy or jew!) worth so much to Hashem?!
Less cyclists die when both cyclists and drivers are conscience of each others presence on the road. Bike lanes help to create this awareness. ! It saves lives! …removing the bike away from Bedford Ave will NOT divert cyclists to another area because it is the best connection to the Williamsburg bridge for many people. This act will only make using that road more dangerous.
Why don’t you guys just push to have Domsey knocked down and turned into an area parking deck?
