Father of child speaks outJerusalem – Angry protests continue to stage throughout Meah Shearim and Kikar Shabbos after a Meah Shearim woman exhibiting signs of Munchausen psychological syndrome in abusing her 3 year old child was seized by state authorities and imprisoned.

Hundreds of protesters rioted and riot police were sent to deal with them. One policeman was lightly injured, and one protester was severely hurt and had to be hospitalized for treatment. 15 protesters were arrested.

The couple are Toldos Aaron chassidim who have 5 children. No accusation of abuse was levelled at the mother for how she treats her other children.

The mother had spent a substantial part of the last 2 years in and out of hospitals with her youngest child, while devotedly insisting on watching the child in the hospital. Doctors were puzzled at the illnesses she reported, and despite numerous tests, could not find the reason for the child’s low weight. Finally, a month ago, the suspicion was raised that the woman suffered from Munchausen syndrome.

Below video a prayer protest staged earlier today on the street

In Munchausen syndrome, the affected person exaggerates or creates symptoms of illnesses in themselves or their child to gain attention or sympathy from the hospital staff. Patients with Münchausen syndrome are aware that they are exaggerating, in contrast to hypochondriacs who believe they actually have a disease. This disorder is a medically recognized condition which is considered a specialty and is treated in clinics as prestigious as the Mayo Clinic.

Doctors placed a hidden camera in the child’s room. The camera recorded that when the woman was alone, she would remove the intravenous supplying the child with nutrients.

Dr. Glick, the doctor from Meuchedet HMO who first suspected the syndrome, reported it to his seniors who soon had the police involved.

The husband relates what he says was the brutal conduct of the health authorities:

“A month ago, there were no complaints from the medical staff. Then suddenly, they began to give my wife the feeling that they don’t want her in the hospital. In the meantime, our child’s health got worse after they gave him his food in a different way. They related badly to us, until a week and a half ago, my wife was given a court order to keep away from the child. She cried a lot, but nothing prepared us for what was coming.”

After the husband and his wife returned from a 3-day vacation, “we were asked to urgently come to the Welfare Dept. We were in touch with them because a social worker helped us with the child’s health problems and the heavy expenses it entailed.

“We sat down with the head of the department, Ruthy Shapira, and she told us we had to show up in court because of the distance order. We left the Welfare department and suddenly six policemen jumped on us and put handcuffs on my wife. Since last week, she’s in custody. If someone is being abused, it’s my wife. They won’t even let her put on her contact lenses.

“My wife is an aishes chayil and a devoted mother. Since she was arrested, I feel a huge hole in my life and great sadness. She was the mainstay of the house. I feel that the police and welfare department is destroying our home. She was devoted to our five children. She dresses them, washes their clothes, and cares for their meals throughout the day. She was never violent. For the past two years, she has stayed with our sick child throughout the day. It’s impossible that she is an abuser.”

In fact, Munchausen syndrome is often so well disguised that even family members are unaware of it and the ones afflicted with the syndrome can appear the very paragon of a devoted parent.

Many Meah Shearim residents are slinging the typical accusations about the Zionist bullies looking for an opportunity to demonize the Meah Shearim populace.

But not all. One resident, who requested anonymity, says that it could be that the woman suffered from a medical syndrome which caused her to needlessly hospitalize her child many times.

“So for that you send a contingent of police to arrest her and throw her into prison? Why wasn’t medical staff sent to deal with the lady? Since when are people suffering from psychological disorders arrested and thrown into prison?” he asks. He attributes the riots in Meah Shearim to the anger of the residents to the ugly way the State dealt with the case.

“They suspect the woman had Munchausen syndrome?” another Meah Shearim resident said. “How did the State handle other cases of Munchausen syndrome? With lurid accusations of abuse and public arrests accompanied by lengthy newspaper articles?”

In the meantime, the secular demonization of Meah Shearim residents is continuing. Child abuse professionals are moaning that the “closed nature” of the Meah Shearim community prevents early diagnosis of the syndrome, and the community’s likely volatile reaction to state interference makes professionals wary to get involved.

However, Dr. Yuval Weiss of Hadassah Hospital said that this particular case will not affect the hospital’s protocol concerning diagnosing similar cases.

“One must be careful in this delicate field, we can’t go to the opposite extreme,” he said. “You can’t suspect every parent. We’ll continue to check out and rule out physical diseases. We see tens of thousands of children from every community, all of whose parents are devoted. We’re speaking about an exceptionally unusual case from which one shouldn’t draw any conclusions.”

The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court partially accepted the appeal by the woman’s lawyer, Atty. David Halevi. He petitioned for her release, saying there was no point in keeping her in custody. A hearing will be held on Friday to consider it.

The judge said, “There is room already at this stage to release her under strict conditions.”

The police at first insisted that their investigation requires the woman to remain in custody, but today retracted their resistance as long as she is released under limiting conditions.

A secret meeting was held between the Jerusalem police commander Aaron Franco, and a group of Aida Hachareidis communal workers. They reached an agreement that the woman would be released in exchange for the community furor coming to an end.
Israeli police detained an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man in Jerusalem Wednesday during a protest against the arrest of an ultra-Orthodox woman for allegedly abusing her son. (Baz Ratner/Reuters)
In the mean time Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat ordered all city services to the area of the Meah Shearim and Geola haredi neighborhoods in the capital be suspended, in an attempt of thwart the threat posed to municipal employees’ wellbeing and in light of the local residents’ vandalizing of city property.

The Jerusalem Municipality said that the services will not be renewed “until such time as providing them will not entail risking human lives.”

If there are legitimate video tapes showing her disconnecting the feeding tubes from the child in the hosptial room, what is the issue. Either she is a criminal or insane but in any event, why would they let such a person out so she can turn on her other 4 children? If the video tape is phony, than the police should arrest whomever at the hospital committed such a fraud..

To those of you who are really concerned. (Especially those who don’t jump to conclusions before hearing what really happened.)

I personally know the mother -she’s a woman everyone would wish to have her as a mother- and the family. And I’m following this story for over a year now. The story in short is as follows, at the age of 1 the child got sick. He had fever, couldn’t keep food down etc. so on the advice of Dr. Floris Levy, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist at Hadassah Medical Center -whom she highly trusted- he was hospitalized In the Hadassah ein-kerem medical center where he was (wrongly) diagnosed with cancer by Dr. Michael Weintraub and Dr. Memet Aker under whose “care” he is until now. the child was and still is under hospitol care the whole time.

As time went by and as the child received chemo therapy (for no good reason) and no turn for the better the mother started to smell that some thing isn’t right. But was brainwashed by the doctors that they are doing everything for the child’s welfare. But as more time went by and still no improvement in the child’s condition. The mother smelled that something is fishy and started to question the doctors. That’s when one of the doctors mistakenly slipped out that the child was misdiagnosed.

The parents were warned not to tell anybody and not listen to anybody’s advice. But even though, the doctors being afraid that the parents will open a malpractice case against them and the hospital. They preemptively counter accused them and opened up this child abuse case against the mother, to cover up their on wrongdoing. And created this exotic condition that the mother never had and b’ezras hashem will never have.

now regarding to the protest’s, rioting, etc. i strongly disapprove of any violence. but if anybody has any good suggestion’s on how to free a Innocent Jewish mother (at least on bail, which the court denied. some thing that would never happen in the u.s. or any other civilized country providing she poses no threat to anyone.) after a week (she was actually arrested a week ago) trying to settle this through the proper channels (lawyers, doctors, etc.) please post/do it ASAP. because i don’t think she can take this much longer.

Now how about as another view on the story.

p.s. she wasn’t arrested in the welfare office she was arrested in the middle of the street as the biggest criminal or worse and is kept so as well (without bail, kosher food, visitation rights, etc.) even though she is no threat to anyone.

p.p.s. I don’t think her religious belief or organizational affiliation make any difference or even belong in the story.

Sounds to me that the police needed to enforce the law and arrest this woman, but did not wish to set off a riot by stone-throwing maniacs who would have endangered the lives of the police officers.

I read somewhere that ever since the mother has been kept away from the child, the child’s condition has improved drastically.

I would also like to say thay a very similar case happened here in NY about 10 years ago. It was a very prominent family and the child actually died after three years of abuse. In that case the family made a deal with prosecutors that the mother will give up custody of her remaining children and she was not prosecuted. The prosecutor agreed to the deal because it was not certain that the evidence was enough to convict.

What about the two doctors who misdiagnosed the symptoms of a two year old??
How come there is no big stink about that and them???
The result of the doctors’ wrong diagnosis is that a two year old had to undergo chemotherapy!!!
Man, that will make any baby lose a lot of weight!
Additionally, how about the psychologist? How many facts did he gather before he came up with his accusation and category of mental illness????

If this women is suffering some mental disorder, how did the doctors diagnose the child as having cancer? It seems to me that the doctors are the ones suffering from a mental disorder.

The truth will come out and when it does many many heads are gonna roll.
I can’t believe how quickly our non chareidi fellow Jews judge anyone who’s more observant than them. I guess it makes them feel more comfortable in their own lack of yiddishkeit. FOR SHAME.

Chilul Hashem to behave like arabs lehavdil. There are legal venues, speaking to the media, protesting in a peaceful dignified manner. Mob mentality would not get you anywhere. If the mother was not happy with the treatment she should have protested it. What is the point of keeping child in the hospitals where you don’t trust the doctors and the treatment.

As a fellow Jew I am truly sad for the child and the mother, however, on the other hand, I am totally not shocked by the story. Even if it would be true that the mother disconnected the tube, something that I refuse to believe as a father of 3 who is eye witnessing a mothers devotion every day, it’s still the way the Zionist police and the secular media paints a story.
The way she was arrested can happen only in the Zionist state, a street arrest belongs to 4 terrorist who planned on bombing a Shul in Riverdale or something alike. If a mother will be arrested in the US for anything involving family matters, abuse neglect, etc. it would be done in her home away from public eye. The one I remember arresting people in public, with massive media coverage, was the late Chazer Eliot Spitzer who had his sweet (at least for the rest of NYS…) end.
Is the woman, if the story is true, the biggest criminal in the Zionist State? Isn’t it just an illness? She’s a gang leader who kills people? She is dangerous for her other children? So why are they in perfect condition?!
So to all of you self hating Jews who love to say that the real Frum Jews are criminals and are mentally disordered living in the Meah Sheurim area, just for your information: you are not different then Hitler Yemach Shemoi who called all the Jews SICK.
Free this lady and free the entire Jewish world. Whenever such a thing happens, the world stamps the Jewish people as hatred people who like to distress each other. Stop talking on behalf of Klal Yisroel, Klal Yisroel are the people all over the world who do everything Hashem wants us in his holy Torah. The rest of them, who are called secular, are just similar to Judaism.
PS. For #3, I guess you are now busy learning… eis losois l’shem hfeiry torosechu. To free a Jewish mother you HAVE to stop learn and do what you have to do. Ask your Ruv about it (if you have one).

Thank You, Chana, for sharing the mother’s side of the story.

Now that you have done so, I am even more convinced that the charges are true and even more convinced just how irrational, conspiracy-driven, and non-Jewish the thinking is within Neturai Karta.

Given that — aside from your paranoia — you seem to be an intelligent person, I suggest you read up on Munchausen by Proxy and consider whether you might be co-dependent. She needed you to feed her need for attention, you neededed her to feed your paranoia regarding the State of Israel.

Now that you have besmirched the names of these fine docotrs, the fine hospital, and the Israeli government that had spent hundreds of of thousands of dollars on this child’s care, I await your apologizing to them in public once the evidence is presented on this case and once the treife medinah has spent many more tens of thousands of dollars providing care for your friend, despite her hatred of them.

I won’t be holding my breath.

Asken in Jerusalem HAS THE TRUE STORY
Asken in Jerusalem HAS THE TRUE STORY

At first when I heard the story of this cruel mother it broke my heart, still I excepted it at face value, it really bothered me how a Jewish mother could be so unkind (to say the least) to her own baby, but being an educated American I decided to take out some of my precious time and investigate the alleged disturbed women story who is part of the radical extreme Neturai Karta group.

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE DISCOVRED:

First of all most of us are 100% sure that she is mentally unstable and she intended to abuse or even kill her own child, because we have unfortunately become globule and eager to except Loshon Hora on a Jew, with out thinking twice into what the news is reporting to us. It’s as if they are teaching the Torah directly from Sinai.

The “true” story I have come up with is, that the doctor who has been treating this child in the hospital miss diagnosed the situation, when she started proving it to him he had no choice but to cove up for his mistake, as soon as she opened her mouth he could not stand her because she was proving him wrong, she knew good and well about the cameras in the room etc. she had told her friends about it, it was no surprise to her, It was a set up by the doctor and staff. In no way shape or form is she part of the Nitura Karta group, its all a bunch of Hug-Wash, the Askonim involved have gone so far as to interview others who have used this particular doctor and some have their own terrible experiences with this doctor, some of them have even been threatened this week by the hospital staff not to dare publicize their stories.

I HAVE SPENT A BIG PART OF MY LIFE HELPING PEOPLE IN AMERICAN AND ISRAELI HOSPITALS; IT DOES NOT TAKE MUCH EXPLANATION WHY MANY ISRAELI’S CHOOSE TO USE OVER SEAS HOSPITALS….

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A HOSPITAL IN AMERICA INSTALLING HIDDEN CAMERAS? THE ONLY REASON THEY DID IT IS BECAUSE THEY WHERE OUT TO GET HER, LETS KEEP IN MIND “SHE IS CHARADI” AND THE HOSPITAL STAFF IS NOT…

I hope this will be an eye opener not to believe everything we hear and read until we verify the truth. There is much more that was discovered but I can’t publicize it yet. She has done NOTHING wrong why is she in jail? this too is part of the cover up.

These are two anonymous versions of a story. We have no reason to believe one over the other. However, a non-observant jew is not trustworthy, see shulchan aruch. Therefore if the doctors and/or hospital staff are proven to be non-observant the issue is simple.

We need to judge all parties favourably in this case. She meant well, and the doctors meant well. Why would only one child be affected by her “disease”? How could doctors misdiagnose the big C? Lab tests are wrong?

To # 14 Your comments seem bias you can accept the brutal behaviour of the police, and the doctors that quietly enjoy it and you expect normal people to sit back and keep quite about it.
Iif they did they would not be any better than those police that behave like NAZIS when it comes to chareidim.
It will be the biggest Chilull Hashem to protest quitely and think about legal matters in such a time when the police and doctors don’t.

I had my son mis-diagnosed in the same Hospital – Hadasah Ein Karem – as well. The high-‘n-mighty Israeli Doc’s said he’s suffering from a hernia, while all the time it was a big boil caused by a streptococcus aureus infection (Staph aureus in medical literature). My son was only a few months old at the time, and you can only imagine the pain he went through while the doctors in the ER were trying to “put the Kishkes back up in place”… I don’t wish the agony I experienced – while watching my child withering in pain – on anyone.
Thanks Hashem some newbie Russian Doc diagnosed the problem correctly, and also showed up a few weeks later to help after the Regular Docs (רופא תורן) managed to botch up the infection drainage system installed via surgery to drain the puss.

Oh, and you can only imagine the looks and backtalk I received from the Professors at the hospital for questioning their wrong judgment…

Good thing they didn’t diagnose me with Munchausen disease…
    Riots anyone?…

to the first poster – sorry, as a medical student, this story just sounds completely implausable. thanks for hte “info” on the mom, but FYI, most close family members and friends of those who suffer from munchausens (or munchausens by proxy) have no idea! the individuals who suffer from this terrible psychiatric disorder become pros at disguising it all. so I am glad you are her friend and want to defend her and all, but I certainly wouldnt want her to be MY mother :(. just a sad fact. she needs to be hospitalized and treated. not demonized!!!

one question though. you say she was thrown in prison where there is no KOSHER FOOD? this is israel we are talking about, not saudi arabia. correct? even US prisons will find kosher food for those imprisoned. in Israel, I dont thin they are feeding the prisoners pork from AMPM that was purchased last friday night.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe would always recommend that people would get a second opinion in diagnosing illnesses, this would clarify the situation and reduce the risks of mistakes. Personally i would not settle with one hospital but would check with several before i felt safe with a diagnosis!

Around 10 years ago, a neighbor and good friend had 4 children. The youngest was always getting sick. My friend was a wonderful and devoted mother and wife. She was/is warm, caring and willing to help anyone.

Her child, who kept getting sick was a puzzle to his doctors, he was seen in many top-notch NY hospitals and no one could figure out what was wrong. He was treated for many illnesses, in the HOPES that he would improve.

FINALLY, in a top hospital, video cameras were secretly installed, and it was discovered that my friend, the mother, was poisoning her child. She was confronted and honestly did not understand what was going on.

SHE WAS ARRESTED on child abuse/endangerment. She was diagnosed with Munhausen Syndrome. She was given house arrest, her other children were taken away for a year, she only saw her children under court supervised visits, and was ONLY returned to her children after her psychiatrist was able to prove to the courts that she was “healed”.
    Sounds familiar???

So to all of you out there who doubt the story, I have lived it, and it seems almost idendical to what I was exposed to.

This woman needs help, not denial and the child MUST BE PROTECTED.

Fellow Yidden- before everybody’s blood pressure boils up and we all need pills, lets take some meditation deep breaths and relax. !. We know that Israelis are not too respectful to Chareidim and vice vers but the secular hate is much greater and vicious. Israelis react on all sides in ver stupid unplanned and unthought out manner.
Let’s all wait and see what happened. All u chachomim in Yerushalayin didn’t even tell us what the hospital says. Regardless the violent response is like little immature babies. A quiet protest at the police station (if they know 100% that this woman is innocent of the syndrome doctors say she has) led by the Rebbe would have been more appropriate. The Mayors cutting services to the whole community shows what a chaya he is as the Govt has NEVER ! (FACT!!) cut services to towns where Arabs or Druzin rioted. Check your records and that shows the secular Myors mentschlichkeit. The deal is she will be released in her own significance is rather puzzling , if the riots stop.

Nothing like standing up for what you want to be right, rather than what is. I do hope, however, that all of this yelling(yes he does have a microphone in his hand but truly, evidently didnt need it) is not being done near the hospital. It would be a sin to have such disconcerting noise disturbing those who are truly physically ill and trying to relax and recuperate rather than have to listen to this crap.
