Washington – Senate Votes to Deny Funds To ACORN

Washington – The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire in several voter-registration fraud cases.

The 83-7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on house-buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C.

The Senate’s move would mean that ACORN would not be able to win HUD grants for programs such as counseling low-income people on how to get mortgages and for fair housing education and outreach.

Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., said that ACORN has received $53 million in taxpayer funds since 1994 and that the group was eligible for a wider set of funding in the pending legislation, which funds housing and transportation programs.

Just last week, the Census Bureau severed its ties with ACORN, saying it does not want the group’s help in outreach efforts on the decennial count.

In recent months, Republicans have become increasingly critical of the census’ ties with ACORN. The group, which advocates for poor people, conducted a massive voter registration effort last year and became a target of conservatives when some employees were accused of submitting false registration forms with names such as “Mickey Mouse.”

Just last week, prosecutors in Miami-Dade County, Fla., arrested 11 people for falsifying hundreds of voter applications during a registration drive last year. ACORN tipped the authorities off to the problem.

On the hidden camera controversy, ACORN says it has fired the employees involved but has lashed out at Fox for pumping up the scandal. In a statement, Bertha Lewis, ACORN’s chief organizer, said the tapes had been doctored and violated Maryland’s wiretapping laws. She promised to sue Fox.

    1. Well it is about time! It was disgusting when the Republicans and George Bush passed a law giving them the biggest funding increase in history. I’m sure the phony Beck-worshipers will comment on this shortly, however I must say that it is nice to see the DEMOCRATIC Senate cut off the funding. While I rarely agree with Democrat policies, I can certainly get behind this one. Now they just have to stop funding all those stupid “faith-based” initiatives and we can start getting back on track.

      • I definitely see your point, but here in NY the huge lobbying power of us Orthodox has resulted in vast sums of money being placed into the coffers of Jewish communal organizations. Are we really willing to close down most of them?

And we’ve also been lobbying (almost entirely unsuccessfully) for school vouchers for more than 40 years.

    2. How about no more funding for any group with tax payers money Including our own? Since when is the gov. my gabai tzedakah if I want to donate to acorn, atime ,chai lifeline I will do it on my own

    3. Its time to focus attention on ALL these “community organizing” groups whatever their affiliation and shut them down. VIN readers would be surprised to know that even some orthodox jewish groups in NYC get federal funding to do essentially the same tasks that ACORN does. They should shut them all down and stop giving away our taxes to these ganovim.

    4. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, we can ask “How do you like THEM apples?
Or “They got a taste of their own medicine”! So far the score has been 13-0. After peta (Purposely decapitalized) and all the other miscreants it’s like a breath of fresh air that the same methods have been used on those holier-than-thou unpatriotic hypocrites and their true face has been exposed!!!

      • Here is the list of the despicable seven:
Predictably, from the home town of Comrade Obama, the two dirty democrats, Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Roland Burris (D-IL).
From the red neck state, a proclaimed “moderate” Robert Casey (D-PA).
From the state of taxation, following in the ideology of her predecessor, our very own Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).
From the beautiful State of Vermont, the two mentally deficient representatives, Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
And last and least, from another beautiful state, home of the first shul in this country, neighboring the cuckoo commonwealth of Massachusetts, representing the people of Rhode Island, the one and only Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

Six democrats, one democrat calling himself an Independent, kissing Obama’s you know what. What a disgrace.

        • Has Obama come out with a statement on this? Obama has not been affiliated with Acorn for some 15 years or so (it was a much different group back then). I’ll wait to hear a comment from the White House on this before I’d say that these 7 were kissing up to Obama as if he agrees with them.

That being said, I am very troubled by these 7 and the voters of their stands should demand an explanation for their vote. However, it is nice to see that the overwhelming majority of Democratic Senators voted to shut this funding down. I congratulate them and the Republican Senators who had the courage to stand up for what is right for a change, regardless of ideology. Kudos to them.

          • Perhaps not affiliated but heavily involved. How about Obama’s service on the boards of two charitable foundations, the Woods Fund and the Joyce Foundation.

According to the New York Times, Obama’s memberships on those foundation boards, “allowed him to help direct tens of millions of dollars in grants” to various liberal organizations, including Chicago Acorn, “whose endorsement Obama SOUGHT and WON in his State Senate race.”

This isn’t fifteen years ago. This is more recent, sir. (mam?)

          • As you continue to goosestep with Obama, please keep in mind he spoke to them a few times while running. He told them he would involve them in the shaping of his administration so he could hit the ground running.

“Let me say that even before I get inaugurated, during the transition we’re going to be calling all of you in to help us shape the agenda. We’re gonna be having meetings all across the country with community organizations so that you have input into the agenda for the next presidency of the United States of America.” (Obama on 12-1-07)

The man is still affiliated with them the same way he is affiliated with SEIU which is all the same. Please start thinking instead of standing on your “laurels.” It is safe to say we both want a safe country and we are not happy where this is going. We need to realize there is no particular party that is perfect but what we do know is that the extreme left has completely hijacked Democrat party.

            • Here we go again. That quote is an interesting one. I could only find ONE source that claims it was said at an actual ACORN rally… some random blog of someone too stupid to check the facts of his own story. In fact, the quote came from the Heartland Democratic Presidential Forum, and while someone from ACORN was a speaker there, Obama was addressing the entire room. This also included JEWISH community groups, including FRUM groups, as well. So, to be fair, it was not about ACORN or addressed to ACORN, it was addressed to a room full of Democratic Community leaders. ACORN was one of over 100 groups represented there.

What I personally LOVE is HOW Glen Beck puts the video into stories about ACORN. He never writes that the video is addressed to ACORN, or done at an ACORN event. He just puts the video and quote on the page with the story. I love how stupid tricks like that get weak-minded, ignorant fools to link the two. Like the people who really thought that Saddam and Bin Laden were working together… anyone who knows anything about Islam knows that could never happen. It would be like getting the Lubavitcher Rebbe to do an TV commercial promoting bacon.

            • If acorn was there then he spoke to them. what difference does it make who else was there?

Why can’t you give credit to glen back when its due? did he expose acorn in action? Did he expose van jones?
Why do you take 1 little statement of his and make it sound like the big picture that’s a typical lib…

Your sadam bn ladin lubavitcher rabbe kugel is not even worth replying to.

            • 1. It was the phenomenal journalism and research Michael Savage and his team of actual journalists who exposed Van Jones, Glenn Beck just rode his coattails. Glenn Beck couldn’t break a story on his own. He has no journalistic skills or integrity.

              2. Acorn was exposed by James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles (2 heroes in my opinion). They did it all by themselves, with their own money and got nothing in return but the thanks of grateful Americans. Glenn Beck, once again, rode their coattails making it seem like he “broke” the story. He even said “where is the MSM on this?” It was funny when they showed how it had been the lead story on EVERY media outlet all day long. He is a liar and a fraud.

              3. So if I speak to a group of 500 yidden and there happens to be 3 Muslims in
the room as well. Would the story be “PMO speaks to yidden” or would the story be “PMO speaks to Muslims”. We both know it is disingenuous and dishonest to lie by omission of facts.
