The New York City Housing Authority said Thursday it has to void 3,018 subsidized housing vouchers known as Section 8. They had already been distributed to people who were counting on them.

The housing authority said it had to pull the vouchers because Congress cut $58 million from its Section 8 budget last spring. There has also been less turnover in the program and more of a demand than expected.

The housing authority gives out about 100,000 vouchers per year. The average voucher is for $800 a month.

It’s about time. The middle class is being squeezed out of the city. You only can live here if you are very rich or very poor. Those living off section 8 and welfare are very often cheating the system by not reporting income or they are too lazy to work. I work very hard, but if I did not have to give a third of my income to the government I wouldn’t be so bitter, because I would be able to afford my rent and not suffer the stress of trying to make ends meet.

.They should stop the entire program since many people cheat or at least have people take a polygraph if they apply to any assistance program to see if they lie..

This is doomsday for any landlord. The first thing New York City Housing Authority does when it has a budgetary shortfall is to suspend subsidies. They will send their inspectors out to find reasons that the apartments can fail inspection, even if it is a tenant who caused the damage, and suspend the subsidy. It can take months to get the subsidy reinstated. Noone answers calls, in the meantime the landlord can’t pay his mortgage. It is why most landlords shied away from accepting section 8 until Bill D’blasio forced through the law that doesn’t allow landlords to refuse to accept section 8. Any landlord that is smart will simply not fill out the paperwork correctly, or fail to install a smoke detector, or something minor like that, just to assure that the apartment never gets approved for section 8 to begin with. Congratulations NYCHA, your gonna stick it to the landlords for your own bookeeping screw up once again. What a bunch of arrogant nasty people they have working there. The only day of the week that anyone answers the phone over there is on Wednesday, and that’s only to tell you that they don’t take any phone calls on Wednesday!

They should phase out ALL of these susidies and let people take responsibility for paying thier own rent. We can no longer afford to have the government pay for everything since they cannot print more money forever and the tax base is drying up. Why should some people get $800 a month from my taxes. Thats nearly a week’s salary for me.

This is excellent news after the scandal in section 8 receivers who don’t deserve it and for the landlords to finally bring down the heretic sky rocketing rents just coz they know they will get it from section 8ers, leaving the middle class hard workers and heavy tax payers without a roof over their heads. i applaud this move and hope only the real deservers get it.

I know you’re all gonna think i’m anti. but i’ve had enough of not being able to rent an apartment because i would not pay the outrageous amount of $4000 a month. so these landlords say no prob We’ll get it from the section 8 tenants. Hashem thank you for answering my prayers.

this country is busy giving billions of dollars aid to other countries but can barely take care of its own citizens.
People are losing jobs left and right and need this assistance now, more than ever!!

A bunch of lazy bums on both sides. We need to fire all those working for section 8 and most city offices you can probably hire a fraction amount of people to do the job. Then cut all subsidies for people on programs for a long period of time. Why should people have section 8 for 20 or 30 years what a shame.

If the section 8 program was entirely suspended in the five boros of New York rents would fall by fourty percent and the purchase price of houses would fall by fifty percent it would be the bigest economic stimulus for middle class workers who earn between 30,000-100,000 dollars a year the profits of retail busniess would go up fifity percent.

I pray that they revoke all the rest of them, its astounding that a program that was supposed to be helping the poor and the needy turned out to excect opposite effect it has caused rent to sky rocket to the point that they end up paying the same money out of pocket as they would have without the section 8 becuase the Landlords are frauds and are just jacking up the price and of course the middle class person is screwd on all sides since he does not get any help and the price does not go down for him so b”h finally some justice

reading all the comments, it is a shame to see how much hatred their is in our own brothers. There are thousands of families with small children that will stay homeless without sec 8. You ACHZORIM have no pity on those children. Remember, what you you wish to others will come back at your own children. G-d has his ways. The government gives billions of dollars for the world poor, but does not have for their own. The poor landlords that are stuck with big mortgages and will have to lose their homes to the banks. Shame on you for bathing in other peoples blood. Your time will come sooner or later and others will laugh and enjoy your sufferings. Remember, Love your brothers, and you will be loved, Hate you brothers and we will be hated by the hole world. HOSHAM YAROCHAM.

From the comments I can see that so many people are in the same shoes as I am, I have to overpay on rent, because the middle-income families can’t compete with the low-income, figure that?

(Reply to #9 ) Of course Hashem has mercy on His nation not on the lazy cheaters who don’t file taxes and are on all gov programs but He has mercy on middle class people like myself who work hard say taxes so and can’t afford to rent an apartment because my tax money allows some greedy animal to rent the apartment instead of me. I prayed all Rosh hashana for this to happen.

I don’t think the problem is with local gov’t. I think the issue is with Washington. They have put out billions in tarp of funds bought out GM and many other corporations and banks, and for the poor guy who can’t pay rent they don’t give a hoot.

It is exactly because of the way Section 8 is set up that the working class cannot afford rent. Watch out for school voucher programs which will have the same result.

This all bullshit I’ve worked hard whole life and lost my house to TBW while on workers comp I then applied for section 8 which I just got and lost last Friday I’m been homeless for a year.I’m a single mother with 3 kids the rents are to high and the government allows these soldiers like my ex husband to leave the county and not pay child support maybe if he helped take care of the kids he made I wouldn’t be here appling for section 8. Also you people who think it would or could never be you I’ve learn the hard way cause now its me and I doesn’t feel good to have to depend on others to help you, when ur sitting a office for 8 hours to hand in one piece of paper or how they treat you like you aren’t nothing please you don’t have no idea what is to wanna work and can’t and have to depend on the government for help until you’ve been there just shut up and I would like to say no one say nothing about all those Jews on section 8 and welfare on acd or those city dollars they are using to by up park ave Franklin and crown height talk that.Talk about how since all those white people move to clinton hill they are kicking out all the blacks who are working people who live there for over 40 years or the old people who’s 500 dollar rents are jumping to 1800 for one bedroom or maybe talk about this low income apartments 80/20 that nyc has that’s telling people they income is to low and they working people and giving it to people that work for transit and the police department for some money under the counter
