Palestinians shot and killed one Israeli and wounded two others early Sunday near Joseph's Tomb, a Jewish holy site inside the Palestinian city of Nablus, the Israeli military and rescue services said. (AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)West Bank – A Palestinian policeman opened fire Sunday at a group of Israelis who had come to pray at a Jewish holy site in the West Bank without authorization, killing one and wounding four, the Israeli military said.

The shooting threatened to inflame tensions in the West Bank, where Jewish settlers and Palestinians live in uneasy proximity and where settlers have responded to attacks in the past with violent reprisals.

Israeli police identified the dead man as Ben-Yosef Livnat, a Jerusalem resident in his mid-20s. Israeli media reported that Livnat was the nephew of Limor Livnat, a prominent hardline Cabinet minister from the ruling Likud Party.

Limor Livnat, who attended the funeral, was quoted by the Maariv daily’s website as saying her nephew had been killed by a “terrorist disguised as a Palestinian policeman.”

Ben-Yosef Livnat and several companions entered the Palestinian city of Nablus early Sunday to visit a site known as Joseph’s Tomb.

Jewish worshippers regularly enter the city with a special military escort to pray at the small building traditionally identified as the gravesite of the biblical Joseph, located inside a Palestinian-ruled area. Those visits are coordinated with Palestinian security forces. Israeli and Palestinian officials said Sunday’s visit was not cleared with either side.

Palestinian officials notified the Israeli military that the Israelis “were shot by a Palestinian policeman who, after identifying suspicious movements, fired in their direction,” the Israeli military said.

Israeli and Palestinian security forces work closely together to prevent violence. A meeting between the sides was scheduled Sunday to discuss the shooting, the military said.

Jibril al-Bakri, the Palestinian governor of Nablus, said the Palestinian Authority was investigating. “The main problem is that they (the Israelis) entered the city without coordination,” al-Bakri said.

Israel’s defense minister, Ehud Barak, termed the shooting “murder.”

“No coordination error can justify such an incident and shooting at innocent people,” he said in a statement.

Shortly after the incident, a crowd of Palestinians gathered at the tomb and vandalized the empty building, setting fires inside and throwing stones.

The Yesha Council, an umbrella group representing Jewish settlers, said the shooting proved the Palestinian government could not be trusted.

“The murder committed this morning by Palestinian policemen cannot be ignored,” the group said.

Hours later, Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian cars south of Nablus, setting fire to one after its passengers fled and stoning passing vehicles before Israeli soldiers dispersed them.

The Palestinian Authority governs parts of the West Bank, though Israel retains overall security responsibility. Nablus moved from Israeli to Palestinian control in the mid-1990s as part of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

In 2000, after deadly fighting around the tomb, Israel’s military pulled out and turned the tomb over to the Palestinians. A mob subsequently ransacked and burned the building.

The tomb was later restored. In recent years, thanks to improving security conditions, Jewish worshippers have been traveling to the tomb in organized convoys.

The West Bank has been largely quiet for several years, but tensions remain. The last attack against Israelis in the West Bank occurred in the same area on March 11, when attackers infiltrated a Jewish settlement near Nablus and killed five members of a family, including parents and children ages 11, 4 and three months.

The Israeli military has arrested two Palestinians for that killing.

    1. The Israeli government is directly responsible for the attack, the weapons used by the PA terrorists/police officers were given to them by the Israeli government as a “good will gesture” to appease the terrorist leader Mahmud Abbas. The lubavitcher rebbe warned 30 years ago and no one listened that if you give the Arabs guns and arm them that it would be used against Israelis and look what happened R”L do you think the Israeli government will learn their lesson and will take action? I don`t think so. Someone who helps out terrorism is also called a terrorist is this cases the Israeli government helped the terrorists (by supplying them with the weapons) so they are responsible for the attack. May the Israeli government have a mapaila as quickly as possible before more people die from Israeli weapons in the hands PA terrorists.

    2. This disgusts me. They are saying that the shooting was not just done by any random palestinian, but one of the palestinian authorities. These are the people chosen to govern the palestinians in OUR state. Israel gave them the power to govern themselves and look where it has gotten us!?
I was on the 75 bus a little over a month ago right next to the explosion. The windows and doors across from me shattered and everyone around me was injured. I was supposed to have exited the bus t binyanei hauma (where the explosion was) and been in the heart of the explosion. Hashem protected me for some reason and i am working to figure out why. I could have ended up like one of these victims, severely injured or DEAD. I take these attacks personally. When they murder or injure a jew, they are murdering or injuring a part of me.
The madness needs to end. We cannot just sit by and allow this to happen. Reading and sympathzing does NOTHING! We all need to get involved and to STOP these murders. Using your public voice, putting pressure on your friends and aquientences. Dont leave it up to others because you never know who could be next. Please help bring the moshiach bimhara biyameinu. AMEN

    3. “The main problem is that they entered
      the city without coordination,” al-Bakri
      said…

The main problem is that the people who were provided guns by the israelis as part of a “peace process” who are supposed to keep up the “peace” in the area, instead shot and killed civilians! How crooked can ones thinking become?

    4. If a Jewish Policeman would kill an Arab on the Al-Aqsa Mosque the whole world would go crazy but when Palestinian Policeman kill a Jew for praying at Kever Yosef a holy site to Jews eveyone keeps silent except for saying how the Jews didn’t belong there and that its not a terror attack but rather an incident

    5. It is not a Palestinian city called Nablus. It is a Jewish city named Shechem. Nablus is a corruption (due to the Arab’s inability to properly pronounce the “p” sound, which does not exist in Arabic) of Napolis, which was the name given by the Romans after the failure of the Great Rebellion in an effort to erase all memory of Eretz Yisrael’s connection to Am Yisrael.
The heter is to maintain a Jewish holy site and conquer the land, which is a mitzva d’Oraita. However, being that it is a mitzva incumbant on Am Yisrael and not any individual they should have co-ordinated with Israeli security authorities.

    6. They should have not gone there;but does Israel shoot to kill at a car that enter Israel illegally; and Is it normal the Israel enter an forbidden area to kill people

    7. I was surprised why CNNmobile had this on their headlines, as in the past they NEVER had stories of Israel suffering in their headlines, only palestinian stories… But then I understood because I found this piece in their story: A Palestinian police officer shot the civilians “after identifying suspicious movements,” the spokesman said, citing information about the incident provided by Palestinian officials.

    8. One “Palestinian” police man did the shooting, One so called “Palestinian” trained by General Tony Dayton with US Tax Dollars, one So called “Palestinian” under the auspices of Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton yemach Shmom. One policeman , imagine what will happen when Bibi caves in and so called “Palestinian ‘ PoliceMEN are free to roam around Israel with their weapons bought from Iran with US tax dollars?
Thanks US Jews who voted for 0bama. Thanks Leftist Israelis who collect Executive Director’s salaries from the EU and all the anti-Jewish organizations. Thanks Yariv Guggleheim the shtinker who is a shtinker for the Arabs! Thank you Arik Sharon Israel’s national vegetable, for giving Jewish land to arab squatters

    9. really nuts.we can only visit by coordination and appointment ! same problem by mearas hamachpela.if the crazy corrupt ” governments” keep giving our holy land away – soon we will need coordination to get back into our homes.Hate to bring it up at a time of mourning-but limor livni has become one of those who want to give the chayas land !
