Brooklyn, NY – Cloudy skies and cool temperatures were no match for the warmth and exuberance that were on display this morning at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn for Our Place’s 5K run, which by all accounts, was a resounding success.
Our Place exceeded its fundraising goal of $85,000 with almost $89,000 raised for the renowned organization that aids hundreds of troubled teens every year. Over three hundred and fifty runners registered for this morning’s race, with separate races held for men and women. The race also included entertainment by DeScribe and was attended by several notable figures including known askan Rabbi Edgar Gluck, Mark Meyer Appel, Assemblywomen Helene Weinstein and Rhoda Jacobs, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and City Councilman David Greenfield and Assemblyman Dov Hikind who ran a portion of the race and expressed his appreciation to the many people who came to show their support for Our Place.

“In today’s very challenging economic times, non-profits are struggling desperately to find ways to close the budget gap,” community activist and Our Place executive board member Chaskel Bennet told VIN News. “For Our Place, not making the budget can mean the difference between life and death r’l. We as a community need to stand up for the children who are falling through the cracks. This race is a magnificent opportunity to do something real and make a difference. I have been involved with Our Place almost since its inception and I am proud to be part of this tremendous event. Runners and sponsors alike should take pride that a major statement is being made by supporting this event and the heroic work of Our Place. And yes, I finished the race in a new personal best.”
The rain held off until after the completion of the race, the first USATF race ever to be held at Floyd Bennet Field.
“This was a great sign of unity for Our Place and the turnout exceeded our expectations,” said Our Place’s Yossi Yurowitz. “It was really amazing to see how many people came out not only to help us raise money but also to show us that they care.”
Aside from sponsors United Realty Partners, Omni Managed Health, Senior Care Emergency Medical Services, Vos Iz Neias, Edison Home Health Care, Kedem Royal Wineries and Weekly Link, many others donated their time and services including DeScribe, Invaderz Production Team, Yossi Soibelman Orchestra and Senior Care EMS, whose medical support and ambulances were, thankfully, not used at the event.
“The enthusiasm today was amazing and this was an awesome race,” said Our Place board member Zvi Gluck. “We had kids from Our Place running the race, who were so touched to see the community’s support. We had another young man who ran last year, pushing his grandfather in a wheelchair. Sadly, his grandfather passed away, and this year he ran the race in memory of this grandfather. While Our Place has so many dedicated supporters, I want to extend a personal thank you in the name of the board of Our Place to Vos Iz Neias for their constant support and always being there for us.”
Our Place hopes that the public will continue to show its support so that, despite massive budget cuts, they can continue to serve the hundreds of troubled teens who turn to them annually. you can donate online at http://5k.ourplaceny.org/
