The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/WtJ96n) reports that a suit brought by the anti-eruv group, the Jewish People for the Betterment of Westhampton Beach, was dismissed by Judge Leonard D. Wexler of the U.S. District Court in Islip.
A representative for the Jewish People for the Betterment of Westhampton Beach said the group plans to file an appeal with the Second Circuit in Manhattan.
Judge Wexler also set a timeline for the remaining two suits: the first, a suit brought by the East End Eruv Association to erect the eruv; and the second, a suit between the villages of Westhampton Beach, Southampton, and Quogue and the utility companies who own the poles.
What exactly is the controversy here? Is this the town that was on the Colbert Report?
it’s the Erev Rav literally.
I don’t understand how anyone can be “anti-eruv”. If I remember the original complaint that the Jewish People for the Betterment of Westhampton Beach filed claimed that the non-Shabbos-observant Jews would be embarrassed whenever they saw the eruv. I’m sorry, but if the eruv proposed in Westhampton is anything like the eruv in my town, the secular Jews and goyim won’t even notice a thing. This is a ridiculous lawsuit. We should all be mispallel that the complainants make teshuva for the chillul H’!
The local Jews are hell bent on keeping any Orthodox Jews from ever be part of that area…..they are ashamed of their own….I am a secular Jew and ashamed of those who turn their backs on their own.
Yuch!!! Why would any Shabbos observing Jew even want to live with these self-hating snobby Jews?
The opposition mainly comes from goyish yidden, as opposed to gentile goyim. In my community, which has an eruv, while walking on Shabbos, I’ve noticed at times smirks or frowns from goyish yidden; in some instances, they are worse than the gentile goyim. Not too long ago, near University Heights, Ohio, the secular yidden tried to stop the expansion of a Shul and day school, in one area. The seculars lost, but it was a protracted battle. It is really a shanda, that there are self-hating Jews, who are so ashamed of their heritage, that they try to take it out on their own.
self hating Jews or goyisha Jews are a bigger problem to frum Jews than goyim. My experience is that goyim silently admire a religious Jew who sticks to his principles and his religion, but it burns up the non observant Jews who think we are relics of the past and stand in the way of acceptance by the non Jews.
The Hamptons is not place for a frum Jew anyway.
On many occasions in our country where an eruv was contested, it was/is almost never opposed by the goyim who can’t care less if there is one more wire strung between any two utility poles. Always by the jewish goyim who feel threatened and embarrassed by the presence of the real Jews in their proximity. We make them feel guilty by reminding them of what they themselves should be, and the power of the residual guilt is amazing.
