Westhampton Beach, NY – The NEW YORK POST (http://bit.ly/YQ8LuA) lent its support today to pro-eruv groups slated to argue their cases next month in the five-year battle to construct an eruv on Long Island.

“Even if you know they’re there, they’re almost impossible to spot,” The POST writes in its editorial, citing that fact that there are dozens of existing eruvs across the country already, including a large swath of Manhattan.
While there have been past challenges, most have failed, reports the POST–due in large part to opponents mistakenly assuming that the purpose of the First Amendment is to guarantee freedom of religion.
“The First Amendment doesn’t require us to tolerate speech—it requires us to protect it,” says Eric Rassbach of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. “The same is true for free exercise.”
The POST goes on to say that, “in more candid moments, some eruv opponents admit that what they really fear is that an eruv would attract Orthodox Jews to their community. This, of course, is the same argument once used to keep African-Americans and other minorities out of all-white towns: There goes the neighborhood.”
no one is fooled. they just dont like frummies.
In most cases, the fear of “Orthodox Jews” are from our own so called secular Jewish brothers.
Interesting the rag paper aka the Post should take this stand where usually the are anti Orthodox any opportunity they get.
A couple of years ago “The Daily Show” did a segment making fun of the eruv opponents. It was really hilarious.
Abe1101 is on the mark.
It is an excellent comment. So true.
No Chiddush that it’s all about keeping frummies out. What else could it be? The almost invisible wires that they would need to put up?!
Perhaps some of the “so called secular Jews” have read some of the closed minded, insular, derogatory, and disrespectful statements that are made about them by the “so-called Frum” on VIN. Would you want such a person as a neighbor?
