Washington – House and Senate Democrats want to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, more than a dollar higher than President Barack Obama proposed in his State of the Union address.

Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin and California Rep. George Miller say their bill, introduced Tuesday, would boost the minimum from its current rate of $7.25 an hour by 2015. It then calls for automatic annual increases tied to changes in the cost of living.

Obama’s proposal last month called for an increase to $9 an hour, but Harkin says that doesn’t go far enough.

The lawmakers say a hike in the minimum wage would help lift millions of workers out of poverty and boost the economy. But top Republicans have rejected the idea, saying it would hurt employers.

They will inflate low self esteem but work the lost cause a bit more. Let it be if you must but the auspices of deserving employment will fall to the samples of ruddy neglect of the chalice of tomorrow. It should be 8.30$.

Finally! It’s about time! I find it personally disgusting that Congress so EASILY passes salary & wage increases for THEMSELVES, every few years or so, but yet… it takes sometimes DECADES, and several Presidents in office, before somebody gives a d*mn enough about the working-poor in this country, to raise what *little* people can pay them for the work they do?!

Because that IS what We’re talking about here folks! I get really sick & tired of people being against Minimum Wage increases because they think it’s some kind of “hand-out” to poor people! Um, excuse me?! It is called “minimum wage”, because it’s the lowest that you can pay a poor soul to do the labor your giving him to do! The LOWEST possible amount – you know… enough to throw a few crumbs at the person, and make sure they don’t starve at least. *eyeroll*

Seriously…I can’t believe in 2013, We’re even talking about $10+ an hour being “enough” for people to make it & survive on, in this day & age, and in this country! Not when 2 gallons of milk costs a person an HOUR’S worth of work nowadays!

Do the people in Congress have a frackin CLUE how to feed a family of 3, 4 or 5, on $8.25 or whatever, and hour?! Or have they ALWAYS lived in the lap of luxury most of them, sheltered from any sort of reality of how most of America lives & gets by?!

YES, raise the Minimum Wage (remember folks…this is money people are EARNING by working, that we are talking about here), to the stupid measley $10+ an hour I guess, cuz ya gotta start somewhere!

But it’s PATHETIC & cruel that Congress beats around the bush SO much w\what WE get to earn, and yet… doesn’t spend a minute’s hesitation at giving themselves cost of living increases all the time!

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO FIRE THE LOT OF THEM?!?!

Why stop there? I think $20 an hour would be more appropriate and even at that rate it only translates to approximately $40k a year. Who can live on that???

Those dems just don’t get it. Everytime they higher the minimum wage, more and more people lose their jobs.
How many times do I have to repeat myself?!

Sounds like a great idea if you’re a low wage worker. But wouldn’t it discourage employers from hiring thereby increasing the unemployment rate?

Why don’t democrats understand that raising the minimum wage causes EVERYTHING to become more expensive?? Why can’t they get it thru their small pithy heads that this is a BAD idea with no good to come out of it.

    This is Incredibly stupid.
why is the minimum wage not enough?
Because it doesn’t supplement the cost of living.
Don’t you think the cost of living will rise along with the minimum wage?
This will simply cause inflation; a loaf of bread will cost $5 because the cost to produce them will be too high due to the increase in the minimum wage.

If the minimum wage had kept pace with inflation it would be at $10.25. Currently there is not one State in the Union where you can rent a median one bedroom apartment and buy USDA minimal food on minimum wage. This is long past due.

Republicans will say the minimum wage is too high, that there shouldn’t be one at all or that it will destroy jobs. The first two arguments are ridiculous. The third? Businesses already use as few workers as they can get away with. Profits have never been higher. The slight increase in wages would be passed on to consumers. But in a country where consumption is responsible for 2/3 of GDP it only makes sense to have consumers who have enough money to buy the products and services.

Actually not such a bad a idea with the current tax/fee/toll/permit/summons system. It’s impossible to make ends meet otherwise. You cannot own a company or run a business or make ends meet besides if you are very rich, because of Government.

Capitalism is exclusive, it’s either it is or isn’t.

Look around us, it’s happening all over the world, it has to be that way, otherwise people cannot survive

    Go for it!

Since there is no incentive to create work for people, the people that have jobs requiring minimal training, get a raise. Professionals, Doctors, Teachers, etc. who have to go through years of training and continous education don’t get a comparable wage increase. It has nothing to do with being fair, life isn’t fair – get used to it. It’s not equitable. Minimum wage is a starter’s or part-timers wage, not a working wage. Minimum wage jobs were not intended as a career path. Minimum wage jobs become the beach head when work can’t be created. This has been a bane of this country since the end of World War II and no President or Congress has the guts to create a work program that incentises business to create work and wages that correspond to work. An example, today technical support workers are being offered $14 to $22/ hour for level II work, that means they have to spend $35 to $50/hour to maintain the knowledge they need. At $22/hour for a 2000 hour year you gross 44K, the government takes and the insurance takes leave you with about 27K, the math don’t add up. Raising the minimum wage is a fool’s quest that gets public sympathy points and doesn’t do a damn thing else.

Kzler, yes the Germans are very efficient and their quality is unsurpassed. During WW II they used both to create the greatest genocidal machine in modern history. The USSR borrowed their technology and techniques and Uncle Joe’s unions were at the forefront of massacring a large percentage of the “workers proloteriat” that didn’t accept the message. Getting back to America, the United States, our creed has always been, “what’s mine is mine and don’t mess with that”. It is unwritten, but enforced by fiat. Increasing wages has always been a catalyst for price spiraling and government intervention in prices and wages is nothing more than a political cartharsis for professional demogogues, like Rush, Hannity, Olberman, Maddow, and other whom have never run anything more complicated than a blender and whose acumen in economics and politics would have retired Friedman and Madison. I firmly believe that Franklin would have a difficult time keeping a straight face amongst the comedians, self appointed, that we implicitly trust. The five political crime families, democrat, republican, liberal, conservative, and independent are deceptive con artists.

    Kzler,

If importing CEOs from other countries is so markedly an improvement over US citizens, start a petition to amend the constitution. In that way we’d be free of the domestic bozos and get ourselves a real leader, like Chavez or Castro or Putin, or the Iranian midget. You wouldn’t have to worry about how you come across or what anyone thinks of wage laws if they were in charge.

At the current wage level “wage floor” workers are below the poverty level and the socialist big federal government is supporting Walmart and other fat corp so they can earn more profit so much for concern about federal deficits and human decency
