Biometric passport stands use facial recognition to let passengers pass through security, simultaneously tightening security measures and waiving long lines, according to Channel 10.

The additional stands were added as part of the Biometric Database Law, which legally requires fingerprint and facial contour collection from Israeli residents for incorporation in Israeli ID cards and national passports.

The law was passed to assist in the prevention of identity theft, and loss, theft and destruction of the traditional blue ID cards. Numbers in recent years showed that more than half of the people requesting a new identity card had a criminal background.

A legally mandated survey sent out by Central Bureau for Population and Immigration Authority found that most residents were highly satisfied with the new passport system, with 86 percent liking the overall process.

Approximately 640,000 people have been entered in the biometric database since June 2013.
