FIEL - People celebrate the passage of the minimum wage for fast-food workers by the New York State Fast Food Wage Board during a rally in New York July 22, 2015. ReutersNew York – A survey of New York school districts has found that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to raise the minimum wage to $15 will increase labor costs for public schools by millions of dollars.

The New York State Association of School Business Officials released the findings on Friday.

The group projects that more than 30,000 employees would see their wages go up if the state goes to a $15 minimum, costing districts at least $276 million.

Michael Borges, director of the association, says the numbers show Cuomo’s plan would have a “significant” impact on the costs of public education and could force higher taxes. He says lawmakers should “proceed cautiously.”

Cuomo has said he supports gradually phasing in a $15 minimum and offsetting it with tax breaks for businesses.
