Sergeant Michael Higgins of the Ramapo Police Department said that they received a phone call yesterday at approximately 12:40 PM after a ten year old girl became alarmed when a vehicle stopped near her on the roadway and a passenger who exited the vehicle appeared to be holding a weapon.

The girl, who lives in South Monsey, told police that she was walking south near 253 Saddle River Road when an SUV stopped approximately 30 feet away from her on the opposite side of the road.

The vehicle is described as a bright red, newer model SUV with grey or silver lower paneling or trim. The girl said that she saw a white male exit the rear passenger side of the SUV and walk to the front of the vehicle, holding what looked like a black handgun.

“She turned and ran away and when she turned back to see if she was being followed, she saw the male back in the vehicle which was driving slowly past her,” Sergeant Higgins told VIN News.

Sergeant Higgins said that the girl, who lives close to where the incident took place, was an excellent witness and that police are continuing their investigation.

“He may not have had a gun but we are proceeding as if he did,” said Sergeant Higgins.

Ramapo police have increased their patrols in the area and will continue to have extra shifts in place over the next few days. Neighboring police departments have been informed about the incident.
