Police said that the incident took place at approximately 6:40 PM on April 27th near the intersection of Division Avenue and Bedford Avenue. The man forced his way onto the bus through an emergency door and set fire to a pile of seforim that were in the glove compartment before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.
The bus was unoccupied when the incident occurred and sustained minor damage to its front end.
Police could not say if the bus was locked when the fire was started. The suspect, who is believed to have acted alone, is described as a light skinned man with a chin strap style beard wearing a light colored sweat suit and dark sneakers.
The incident is being investigated as a hate crime and police have released surveillance footage of the suspect.
