City Councilman Eric Ulrich is one of 17 candidates hoping to succeed Letitia James as the city’s public advocate in an upcoming special election on February 26th to fill the vacancy created when James became became New York State attorney general at the start of the calendar year.

While the race is non-partisan and Ulrich is running on his self-titled “common sense party” he is the only Republican in the race which is open to voters of all political parties. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of former Mayors Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg who managed to woo Democrats and win as Republicans.

“I know a Republican can win in New York City,” Ulrich told VIN News. “I want to be someone who brings New Yorkers together in all five boroughs.”

Ulrich has represented the 32nd City Council District which includes parts of Southern Queens since 2009, winning two elections in a district where he says Democrats outnumber Republicans by a three to one margin.

Reacting to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s remarks on combatting anti-Semitism at a press conference held earlier today as previously reported on VIN News (http://bit.ly/2S3Xqbg), Ulrich criticized the mayor and called him out for not taking Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar to task for her derogatory remarks about Jews.

“It’s nice that he woke up,” said Ulrich. “Anti-Semitism is on the rise with so many people hostile to the Jewish community.”

Ulrich categorized himself as a real friend of the yeshiva community, pointing to a ten year track record defending parents’ rights to give their children a religious education in private schools. The father of a Catholic school student, Ulrich said that attempts by the state to have public schools regulating private institutions are very personal to him, and not just politics as usual.

“I am going to stand shoulder to shoulder with my friends in the Jewish community and fight for them better than anyone else in this race,” vowed Ulrich.

I was considering voting for him but after the Amazon debacle I have decided to never vote again.
