The department continues to address violence and the increase in shootings through precision policing, and other targeted deployments, gun takedowns and close collaboration with the District Attorneys on firearms cases.

“New York City continues to see crime reductions, and that’s due to the dedication, professionalism and hard work of the members of the NYPD in partnership with the communities they serve,” said Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill. “Together we’re laser-focused on violent crime, and that’s put us in a positon where we can address crime conditions and make the city even safer.”

“New York City police officers continue to earn their title as the best in the world,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Thanks to their hard work and the trust they continue to build with the community they serve, crime is down this month. That means more people stayed safe, more families stay whole, and New York City remains the safest big city in America.”

Key highlights from this month’s crime statistics include:

  • A -2.1% reduction in index crime in August 2019 (8,775) compared to August 2018 (8,963).
  • Murder in August 2019 (31) increased +6.9% compared to August 2018 (29). Year-to-date, murder is down -3.8%.
  • Year-to-Date reductions in every major index crime category, except Felony Assault, which saw a +0.2% increase.
  • Transit crime -11.3% in August 2019 (205) compared to August 2018 (231).
  • Hate Crimes increased by +41%, year-to-date. Hate Crime arrests increased by +25%, year-to-date.
  • Rape in August 2019 (155) decreased -7.7% compared to August 2018 (168).Year-to-date rape is down -1.8%. Rape continues to be underreported. If you have been a victim of sexual assault, please come forward. The NYPD’s Special Victims Division 24-hour hotline is 212-267-RAPE (7273).
  • In addition, the NYPD changed the CompStat sheet in August to include Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Rape as well as Other Sex Crimes. The NYPD has always tracked and vigorously investigated sex assaults. This victim-centered change aligns the CompStat sheet with nationwide reporting practices and makes it more transparent. For the month of August, compared to last year, UCR Rape is 227 versus 230 (-1.3%), and Other Sex Crimes is 478 versus 490 (-2.4%).

Fun fact: if the police forget to write down a crime, it is forgotten and not included in the stats.

if you don’t respond to crimes then they don’t count and don’t puff crime is falling. cops have no incentive to show up as they have to document a crime, but if they don’t show it never happened. cooking the books is a part of NYPD so much that they must be great chefs by now, although looking at average cops they seem to be more consumers of food than makers of it.

There is also the issue of changing laws that considered certain things crimes that are no longer so. Comparing these numbers is misleading, apples and oranges.

interesting that most of the news on the radio is about shootings and crime in all NYC boroughs and all the anti-semitic attacks in NYC- so how does that add up to crime going down ?
they need to go back to school and learn math
