JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Bnei Brak rabbi has refused to officiate at the marriage of the son of Avigdor Liberman, the head of the Yisrael Beiteinu party.

Rabbi Baruch Dov Diskin, who is the rosh yeshiva of the Orchot Torah yeshiva in Bnei Brak, said he did not want to appear to endorse the politician, who is staunchly anti-haredi.

Amos Liberman lived a haredi lifestyle, attends Diskin’s yeshiva and maintains a close relationship with him, according to reports.

The rabbi would need special permission to officiate at the marriage since he is not registered with the chief rabbinate to perform wedding ceremonies, The Yeshiva World news website reported.

Rabbi David Grossman, who has officiated at many high-profile weddings in Israel, reportedly will officiate.

Another controversy surrounding the wedding being reported by Israeli media is that Amos Liberman wants to have a haredi wedding, with complete separation between men and women but his father objects.

“The wedding will be Jewish, not haredi, as there will be rabbis, secular people and religious people at the wedding,” Liberman’s office told Israeli media in a statement.

In R’ Diskin’s own hometown of Bnei Brak, descendants of Haman learned (or taught) Torah (Sanhedrin 96b), and no one considered that to be “endorsing” Haman.

Whatever Avigdor Liberman is, a Haman he’s certainly not. And if his son has repudiated his father’s ways, then how can R’ Diskin do such a thing? אבות יאכלו בוסר ושיני בנים תקהינה?

You’re not allowed to question Daat Torah so stop believing you know better. And the father needs to respect his son’s wishes at his own wedding and not stick to his apikores ways and challenge the mechitza his son wants!

AH:

Nice try. Several problems here.

1. Today’s Bnei Brak is not the same location as the one that existed during the times of tanaaim and amoraim.
2. It is a stretch to consider things done then as political statements.
3. Learning under the descendants of Haman was not an endorsement. Haman was already dead, hung, and back in history. The victory over his gezairoh was already complete. Leiberman appears healthy, and gives no indication of retiring or leaving politics. His anti-Torah voice is strong, and this deserves to openly and boldly rejected. Not doing so is tantamount to tolerating blasphemy. That’s what Klal Yisroel did by the maaseh eigel, for which we still suffer today. I don’t understand R’ Dovid Grossman, and I assume he has an alternative explanation for his decision.

Simple, if Mr. Liberman, et al don’t want to abide by Torah, they have no moral right to live in The Holy Land. Natural born or not.
They’re disrespecting all the Torah Giants, both men and women, as well as millions of devoted Jews.
Any insults flung at Mr. Liberman, are well deserved.
