Every Yid must wear tefillin every weekday while saying Kriyas Shma and Shmone Esre. And the Halacha is, that if the Tefillin Shel Rosh are in the wrong spot, it’s as though you haven’t put them on at all.

The Chofetz Chaim stresses this point in the Mishna Berura (Orach CHaim Siman 27, Seif Katan 33), stating that it’s an absolute necessity that the Tefillin Shel Rosh not extend where the hairline begins. If your tefillin extend by even a hairline amount beyond that point, you have not fulfilled the Mitzvah properly!

Today, it’s very common to find many observant Jews who aren’t wearing their tefillin properly, often because of longer hair or Tefillin straps that stretched over time. The Chafetz Chaim emphasizes that if your Tefillin slip from their correct position you must return them to their position immediately, and recommends that you wear your Tefillin a little higher on the head than necessary, to be safe.

Here’s a way to test if you’re wearing your Tefillin correctly: with the Tefillin on your head, grab the Tefillin box and pull downward with moderate pressure. If the Tefilin slips on to your forehead, this is a sign that the straps are stretched too much, allowing your Tefillin to easily slip out of place. You should immediately adjust your straps by tightening the knot on the back to make sure the Tefillin form a snug fit.
