Authorities told news outlets that a woman was driving a Mercedes SUV Friday afternoon near the suburb of Aventura and was trying to cross the tracks when a Brightline train struck her. She was pronounced dead at the scene, but her name has not been released.

Federal Railroad Administration records show that 11 people were killed by Brightline high-speed trains between Jan. 1 and May 31. Media reports show at least eight more deaths since then.

Brightline connects Miami and West Palm Beach.

This doesn’t mean ban high speed trains and move back to the stone ages . It means stronger controls

The imperative question to ask is why it happened. Did the system malfunction of did she take a chance?
This area is quite congested and it might be necesary to elevate the tracks here although with minimizing slopes this might be a project of several miles.

I don’t know what occurred regarding this specific accident, and I feel badly for the victim and her family. I wanted to state that according to statistics published by the NTSB, the majority of these accidents at railroad crossings, are not the result of a mechanical problem with the gate not coming down, or the lights not flashing. Rather, these accidents seem to occur, because the driver is either distracted and not paying attention to the flashing lights, or he/she tries to race through the intersection, as they feel that they can beat the train, and don’t have patience to wait. It is a bad idea to do so, as cars have become stuck on the tracks and/or stall. Also, someone once told me of a case, whereby a delivery driver did wait and stop at a grade crossing, and proceeded to cross the tracks, after the train passed by. Unfortunately, he did not look the other way, as a train was proceeding simultaneously from the other direction, and he was killed.
One time, I came to a railroad grade crossing, where the gate was up, and the lights were not flashing. Nevertheless, I slowed down, and looked in both directions, to make sure that there was no train coming. Would everyone believe that the idiotic jackass in back of me, was honking his horn loudly, as he was too impatient to wait a few seconds. There is no doubt in my mind, that the ignorant p—- would have raced a train through that intersection, if he had the chance.
