Yitzhak Meir Weiss, a 31-year-old graduate of the Mir Brachfeld Yeshiva in Kiryat Sefer, had waited a number of years before his only son was born five months ago. Just four days ago the infant died at the house of its carer of crib death, and the distraught father collapsed while sitting Shiva in Bnei Brak for his son.

Avi Wilman, an Ichud Hatzalah paramedic who had treated the baby last week, was one of the first on the scene to treat the father. Wilman said that “today we received a call from a person feeling weak and dizzy. Initially we didn’t think that it was a complex case. We came there and he spoke with us and said that his stomach hurts and he can’t go on any more.

“At  a certain point he got weaker and weaker before our eyes and we began resuscitation. Other forces joined us including a paramedic who was friendly with the father. An ambulance arrived and then an ICU ambulance and after an hour he was taken while being resuscitated to hospital, where he was declared dead.”

Wilman added that “We are terribly shaken, even when you are the most experience paramedic it’s not easy to treat a little baby and when you treat the father just four days later it’s even more difficult.”

Not a mention of the mother? But crib death at “carer”?

That’s nebech a case of someone dying of a broken heart. It happens often in nursing homes when “failure to thrive” causes some people who no longer have the will to live, to just wither away & die (even though they have a feeding tube, or are still eating or being fed sufficient nutrients). But for a young person of 31, it is very rare & heartbreaking. Boruch Dayan Emes.
