TEL AVIV (VINnews) — As strong rains continued to buffet Israel’s coastal region Sunday, more casualties were reported. A 71-year-old man drowned in the town of Binyamina after his car was swept along by floodwaters and he was trapped under a stream. Firemen worked for an extended period of time with tractors and cranes to extract the car from the stream, but when they succeeded in removing the car, they found the occupant with no pulse and paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

In another incident near the town of Zichron Yaakov adjacent to Binyamina, searches were being conducted for a man who was swept away by a flooded stream. The man and his son had attempted to ford the stream. The son succeeded in reaching the banks of the stream but his father was swept away.

In Haifa, firemen succeeded in rescuing two people trapped in their car in the Kishon river which also overflowed, and in Nahariya the train service was stopped after the Gaaton river which traverses the center of the city overflowed.

The two Israelis who died after an elevator flooded in Tel Aviv on Shabbat were identified as Dean Shoshani and Stav Harari, a young couple in their 20’s.  70 mm of rain fell during a 2-hour period of torrential rain in Tel Aviv on Shabbat, causing significant flooding.
