DRAMA: Rabbi Aharon Feldman And Rabbi Malkiel Kotler Threaten To Quit Moetzes Over WZO Controversy

NEW YORK (VINnews) — Over recent months, many news outlets and social media platforms have been abuzz with a topic, known as the WZO elections. Although it has proved to be a hotly debated topic, many are still unaware as to what exactly this issue pertains to, as well as what the ramifications are.

This article will attempt to clear up that confusion, as well as to bring previously unknown facts to light, revealing much behind the scenes drama that has been preventing some of America’s well known Gedolim from making their opinion known on the matter.

Let’s start from the beginning. WZO stands for the World Zionist Organization. The WZO is an organization made up of mostly Americans that identify as reform and progressive Jews. Their agenda is to infiltrate Israeli society, and discard much of the Charedi influence from policy making. Issues they are trying to influence include having an egalitarian prayer area at the Kosel, that the religious Rabbanim should not oversee legal marriages, divorce & even conversions in Israel, as well as many other issues that directly contradict the values of the Charedi community.

The way the WZO is able to infiltrate Israeli policy-making, is by working with the Jewish Agency and other national trusts that distribute significant funding to projects and movements they wish to advance.

Every five years the World Zionist Congress has elections. These elections determine the composition of the World Zionist Congress which makes numerous decisions in both policy and fund allocations that directly affect the status quo of the aforementioned policies.

In case there is any doubt as to the true motivations of the WZO, the following is an excerpt of an email sent out by Jennifer Brodkey Kaufman & Rabbi Rick Jacobs of the Union for Reform Judaism:

Today, we are writing to share an urgent appeal concerning the World Zionist Congress election…

…The results of the election are nothing short of essential for the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMPJ), whose funding streams are determined by the results of the election.

So much of the dramatic growth of our Movement in Israel throughout the past five years can be traced directly to our success in the 2015 WZC election. This year, our Reform partners in Israel have asked over and over again, with deep concern, about our campaign work here in the United States – and they cannot stress enough the importance of a strong showing by our Movement…

…However, it is with both sadness and alarm that we have witnessed some truly ugly efforts to undermine us, carried out by those who recognize that our success will allow us to more effectively advance our Reform views and values. Some slates have gone so far as to explicitly claim that we are supporters of BDS and haters of “true Judaism.”

They fear that our victory would be critical in advancing religious pluralism, peace, and economic justice in Israel. They are right to be afraid – because that is exactly what we intend to do!…

This email openly confirms the agenda of the Reform movement through their ARZA party to use the WZO to promote their agenda. Some in the American orthodox community have doubted how important this campaign is and if the stakes are real. Well, according to the Reform movement, “The results of the election are nothing short of essential for…Reform and Progressive Judaism, whose funding streams are determined by the results of the election.” And, “So much of the dramatic growth of our Movement in Israel throughout the past five years can be traced directly to our success in the 2015 WZC election.”

Here is where the story takes a dramatic turn.

Recently, one Rosh yeshiva, Rabbi Elya Brudny had reportedly announced his support of those voting in the WZO elections. Shortly thereafter, he was branded a “Zionist” on photoshopped signs that were hung all over Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood.

The absurdity of that statement is obvious. Participation in the elections is not an endorsement of anything the WZO was or is. Anyone who cares at all about Israel having policies that don’t contradict Torah values would do well to vote in an election that can help drain the funding for the opposing effort.

There was outrage in the Yeshiva and many complained to the leadership to demand that the Yeshiva take action against the person responsible. In fact there was even a demand that there be a public Asifa (gathering) to denounce this outrageous chutzpah. For reasons that had not been known at the time, the plan was squashed.

It later became known, that the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Malkiel Kotler was vehemently opposed to voting in the WZO.

Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky of Phildelphia Yeshiva had also recently taken the same position as Rabbi Brudny. A viral phone recording has circulated that backs this up.

In this case, there appeared to be strong pushback from two prominent Rosh Yeshivos in America, Rabbi Malkiel Kotler of BMG and Rabbi Aharon Feldman of Ner Yisroel in Baltimore. Both are ardent supporters of the extreme views of the late Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach, who encouraged violent protests against the Israeli Government in response to the IDF draft controversy.

Well placed sources tell VIN that Rabbi Feldman and Rabbi Kotler have threatened Rabbi Kamenetsky that they will quit the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah of Agudath Israel if he does not pull his endorsement.

Additionally it appears that the Moetzes themselves are considering releasing a letter with an official statement on this debacle, however VIN has been unable to verify the details of this letter or when it will be released.

It is the hope of VIN that this article will serve to clarify the true ramifications of the WZO elections, as well as to publicize the true positions of some of America’s leading rabbonim and those who oppose them.

Typical media bias. This issue has nothing to do with Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach. ALL of our Gedolim always strictly prohibited voting or joining with these people.

Reb Elya Brudny is not the Gadol Hador of America. He might be the Asken Hador. A Gadol Hador can only be one who spends his life learning day and night. Not someone who runs around all day speaking at every available opportunity.. An asken is also a very important thing, but who does he consult with to get true Daas Torah from?

Very well written and very truthful. Of course we disagree with the policies of the WZO and every thing they stand for. ANd that exactly is the reason why askanim are trying to infiltrate the WZO to hopefully minimize the damage they do and maybe even influence things more in favor of the Torah and Orthodoxy. If chalila the time comes when you won’t be able to go to the Kosel to daven because of the Reform pluralism agenda – you will have no one to blame but yourself for not joining this battle.
Rav Shmuel Kaminetzky and Rav Elya Brudny fully understand this and are therefore in favor of joining and voting in the WZO elections. And there are many other poskim and Gedlim that agree with them.
Sad that some are trying to make political statements of this effort, How petty and shameful.

Half truth = full lie.
WZO has many organizations running in it and the Reform along with Israel hating Jews like Beinert of New Israel Fund and J Street are some of them. The ZOA, Zionist Organization of America, is running , I believe as no.11 on that list, which included pro-religious groups. A frum chareidi slate is also running on its own. It’s actually important to vote for any of the aforementioned groups. R’Kotler is an extremist, doesn’t represent the majority of religious Jews , and this article is insinuating that the Reform is the entire WZO. Sheker. Frum Jews need to stop lying.

It’s actually important to vote so that the reform doesn ‘t get a pluraity, hence influence. There are others on the slate and their names and positions are available if you search. Religious people not voting increases the chances of the reform. Do your diligence instead of slurping koolAide.

There are 15 slates running in the WZO. Reform is only 1 of them.
You can vote Eretz Hakodesh, Orthodox Jewish Coalition, Shas Olami. Many honored rabbonim are involved in these slates. WZO can be what we want it to be.
This a very important election for the frum. We must counter the Reform slate because they have masses. Thankfully, Rabbi Auerbach’s position represents a miniscule percentage of adherents. Vote..!!!

Not sure what all of the tumult is about. The State of Israel, which apparently is also antithetical to Torah values, is the biggest funder of Torah in Jewish history of which a majority of the Chareidi community is supported gladly.

Any honest intellectual who knows just a little history knows that all the previous gedolim from wall to wall were vehemently opposed to participating in the WZO even at a great loss of money and influence. This is not a new issue it has been dealt with for the last 150 years. It would be fair of VIN to be more objective and include Rav Ahron Feldman’s letter. This has nothing to do with Rav Aurbach. Rabbi Brudney realized his mistake and respectfully backed off. His name was taken off their website. If Rav Kaminetzky supports it he is a daas yachid going against all the gedolim of today and previous generations.

Truth shall make you and the emes is the basis for yifddishkit. How all these fine rabbonim expect protection from zahal, air force and the navy whjen asser the whole medina as treife. In 1967 there was a picture of a chayal with tefillin and tallis davening next to a tank. Instead of worrying abouit politics maybe we do more maasim tovim. So far all the seminaries and Yeshivas are accepting the protection from the medina. Are all soldiers shomer mitzvas , no and are all yeshiva students do maasim tovim, NO . maybe we concentrate more on our yiraS SHomayim. ,maasim tovim and erliche tefilla instead of politics. It is funny and sad that a Yid who saved thousands of yidden from Iran belonged to Mizrachi. Maybe if we try to instill in our children ahavas Yisroel we would be better. In Birkenau in the gas chamber there were Bundisten, Mizachi, aguda people and stam yidden they all stood together and inhaled Zyklon B, any of you know what it is???

One glorious seminary in Yerushulayim has the head or menhaleth , daughter of a Rosh Yeshiva who holds a PhD from Columbia and advises the stdents not to attend college. If you look in the background of many frumakis you discover an incongruency which shows a double standard. Recently VIN posted a notice where a gerer chusid became a physician. Yes the Rambam was a physician and then there was Reb Yochanan h’sandler. The Yeshivas should foster ahavas Yisroel, learning and maasim tovim. I wonder if any of these fine bochurim attending Yishovas in holy land ever set a foot in the Yad Vashem. Sitting in erez Yisroel and using services which the medina is FAKE, FAKE AND FAKE again

Reb Reuven Gruzhovsky Zatzal explains in Bayos Hazman pg. 66, why he and many Gedolim of his generation permitted to join the Israeli Government, but not other Zionist organization like the WZO (he specifically mentions the World Zionist Congress). First he explains that a ‘government’ is not theoretically a ideological entity, it’s a political entity it’s job is to run a country not necessarily advance a particular ideology. Secondly and most importantly he says, if you live in Israel you are for all practical purposes already joined with them, you pay taxes, you are bound to it’s laws, they control you, they have power over you, someone will represent you in the Knesset, either someone who’ll look out for our interest or not. As oppose to the WZO who’s mission is solely spread Zionism and we are not dependent on them.

There is a reason for 150 years we haven’t joined the WZO.

The views of R’ Shmuel Auerbach are extreme in many ways, Besides of committing tremendous chilul hashem
by the Peleg youths and a lot of bitul torah it also creates terrible polarization in Israel and around the world which in the end the chareidi population in Israel and worldwide are the ultimate losers both financially and even spiritually.

What a disgusting article all are in agreement that R Shmuel Auerbach ztl was a gadol in every debate amongst gedolim one view will be more stringent than the other that doesn’t make it extreme that’s like saying Bais Shamai was an extreme opinion even though his opinions may have seemed extreme to the unlearned cultured observer like all daas Torah his opinions were rooted in Torah knowledge
