LONDON (VINnews) — Grand Rabbi Uri Ashkenazi, the Stanislaver Rebbe of London passed away Thursday from the coronavirus at the age of 76.
In the past few days the Rebbe felt unwell after becoming infected with the virus. He was admitted to hospital but released due to the hospital being inundated with patients. After returning home his condition deteriorated until his passing Thursday morning.
Rabbi Ashkenazi was a son of Rabbi Meshulam Yissochor Dov Ashkenazi who survived the Holocaust and established the Chasidus in London. He was also a descendant of Rabbi Chanoch Henich, the Alesker Rebbe who was the son-in-law of Rabbi Sholom Rokeach of Belz and a descendant of the Chacham Zvi.
Rabbi Ashkenazi was a well known Mohel in London and continued to lead the Beis Midrash in Stamford Hill until his untimely passing.
The London Jewish community, which has suffered many losses from the virulent COVID-19 virus, was shocked to hear of the Rebbe’s passing. He is survived by his children and grandchildren including his son, the Stanslaver Rebbe of New York.
