TEL AVIV (VINnews) — In the wake of the secular protest against prime minister Netanyahu in which a thousand people gathered in Tel Aviv Thursday night, Israeli secular journalist Guy Lehrer posted on his Twitter page a call for allowing religious people to conduct minyanim while maintaining social distance guidelines.

Lehrer wrote that “originally we were covering intensively, almost solely, the violations in Bnei Brak despite all of the curses and epithets. Now, after our outlook has changed and after pictures emerged of gatherings in the secular public, we should rely on the common sense and responsibility of people and allow minyanim to take place with protection, social distances and preferably outdoors.”

The Tel Aviv protest demonstration, which received police authorization, infuriated religious people who are prohibited from conducting minyanim despite the fact that police allow demonstrations against the government to take place.

Demonstrators claimed that they received police permission to gather after they promised to maintain the public health guidelines and stand two meters from one another.

Israeli police stated that “in accordance with the emergency guidelines and the public health directive as authorized by the government, demonstrating is considered an essential democratic right for every citizen while maintaining rules and restrictions. Even at this time of emergency, police are allowing every person freedom of speech and protest as a basic democratic right under the restrictions of the law and the public health directive.”
