JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In a tragic corollary to the coronavirus’s effect on the economic situation in Israel, a well-known store owner in the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem committed suicide due to his economic difficulties, according to a report by Army News.

Jerusalem mayor Moshe Leon responded to the tragedy stating that “I am shocked and pained by the bitter news which arrived from the Mahane Yehuda market. A businessman who could not survive the economic maelstrom has put an end to his life. I call on the government to immediately open the market. The livelihood of thousands of families is in danger. Any delay could cost lives.”
Israel agreed Sunday to ease the lockdown and open all stores including hair stylists and beauty salons but all malls and markets remain closed as the government waits to see the effects of its measures on infection levels.
Still, one suicide is a lot less than the number of dead who would catch the virus in an open market and die.
Ay Yay Yay hashem should help ala yidden
but who is going to go to the market? 100000 people are going to hang out there?
i think not…. the world economy is too broken
thanks the communist govt of china for not telling the truth and letting this evil spread around the world
obviously it is all in Hashems hands
i feel horrible for the storeowner and his family
Hashem should show them abundance of kindness

Most commentators are sitting in their home in the USA. We are as well but my wife is a native Israeli and I value her opinion on Israeli issues.
She finds this suicide and the extended closing sad and misdirected. You must understand that Mahane Yehuda is required to remain closed while other markets and stores are now allowed to be open. That is absurd, the dangers of transmission might be less in an outdoor setting. There is still room for controlling access so it doesn’t get too congested.
Any business owner is stressed financially if forced to stay closed, the shuk merchants were really mistreated because they were originally told that would remain open and stocked up, to be closed suddenly a day later.
I understood VIN did not report suicides. Am I mistaken?
