WASHINGTON (AP) — The University of Notre Dame has become the second university to withdraw as the host of one of this fall’s three scheduled presidential debates amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The university was set to host the inaugural face-off between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on Sept. 29. The first debate will now be hosted by Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday.

The commission has selected Cleveland Clinic as its health adviser for all three presidential debates and the one scheduled vice presidential debate.

In a release, Notre Dame President the Rev. John Jenkins said the university made “this difficult decision because the necessary health precautions would have greatly diminished the educational value of hosting the debate on our campus.”

The University of Michigan was scheduled to host the second presidential debate but withdrew last month. That debate will now be held at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.

  1. We know the reason. It’s because they don’t want Joe Demented Biden to be seen and heard debating.
They don’t want America to see a doddering 78 year old almost senile candidate .
There will not be debates. DevilDemons are scared.

  2. The gang surrounding Biden will never allow debates, nor live press conferences with questions , nor serious interviews with news hosts.
This gang will run the country if their Charley McCarthy should steal the election thru these mailed cheat ballots.
The Biden voter won’t be voting for him , they’ll vote for a criminal Marxist Politburo.

    • You mean like the surprise that your state, under its “competent” governor, now has more cases of the Chinese virus in his state than any other, including states whose governors you mocked? Or like the surprise that you’ve been too chicken to comment on this and admit you were wrong?

      • i commented on this long ago…I don’t know what happened here…the virus seems unpredictable…but that leaves me with two undisputed facts—first, the country as a whole is far worse off than any of its peers, as a result of the incompetence of its national “leaders”…and second, every indication is that we are in for a nightmare fall and winter….whatever is happening in California , I am far more comfortable with Newsome than I would be under a complete idiot like Desantis or Kemp…can’t wait till we speak on November 4 after the country is restored to sanity….aren’t you worried that your hero will be routed…or are all the polls fake?…after all, you can point to Hillary and the vast “silent majority” LOL

        • In other words, you still can’t bring yourself to admit that you were wrong, and you still continue to call DeSantis and Kemp “complete idiots” even though their states are doing better than yours. So by saying that you’re “far more comfortable with Newsom,” you’re saying that you don’t really care, and have never cared, about the deaths; in fact, like a good member of the Democrat death cult, you consider the more of them the better, as long as you can use them to attack Republicans.

As for November – you’ve written over and over again about how sure you are of what will happen then. You may have noticed (or perhaps you haven’t; you don’t seem too big on noticing details) that I have not. Because, unlike you, I don’t pretend to be certain of events several months out. I certainly hope that, G-d willing, Trump will be re-elected, if nothing else than because at this point the Democrat party is an abusive spouse (“vote for us, or we’ll continue burning down your cities”). But, unlike you, I don’t have to bluster and blather constantly about it.

          • LOL…you are not posting about the outcome because you know what is going to happen…plain and simple…how about a friendly wager…on November 4 one of us comes on this site to congratulate the victor and then stays off this site for three months?….As to your point on Governors, please move to Georgia or Florida to enjoy these fine Governors before the people throw them out of office for completely mishandling this health crisis.

          • No, I’m not posting about the outcome because I don’t try to predict the future, unlike you, who seem so sure of yourself (and, let it be noted, were equally sure of yourself in 2016). And yet we notice another difference, namely that you can maintain your cognitive dissonance only by denying obvious facts, such as the existence of Antifa or the attacks on Jewish stores in LA.

You still have failed to explain how the governors of Georgia or Florida have “mishandled this health crisis,” when their states are doing better than yours, or than New York, etc. Unless, of course, you mean that saving lives is “mishandling” things, because you want as big a body count as possible.

  3. Who cares ? He served nearly 30 years as a senator and 8 as Veep and accomplished nothing.
Nobody votes FOR this fool. They vote AGAINST Trump.
Everyone here knows Biden is just a 3 card monte front for sinister dark forces.

  4. Hundreds getting shot, businesses destroyed, parents scared for their kids, no school, no mom/pop stores anymore, police beaten..
Now go vote for Biden. Dare you !!!

    • “Hundreds getting shot, businesses destroyed, parents scared for their kids, no school, no mom/pop stores anymore, police beaten..
Now go vote for Biden. Dare you !!!”

This is all happening under Trump’s reign. Biden is not in charge now.

      • And the Civil War happened during Lincoln’s presidency. Do you blame him for the states seceding too? You seem to think that a president is an absolute monarch (or even a god), such that everything that happens during his time in office is directly attributable to him, not realizing that you have governors, mayors, etc., who have their own agendas.

      • Happening in Democrat-run cities, Trump wants to send in the Feds, they say no. MSM is not helping. Trump wants to OPEN the schools. And the Democrats are the ones pushing to defund the police. Brush up on your facts before you go bash Trump, the most pro-Israel president in a long time and far more pro-Israel than Biden.

  5. In a release, Notre Dame President the Rev. John Jenkins said the university made “this difficult decision because the necessary health precautions would have greatly diminished the educational value of hosting the debate on our campus.”

Huh there were not suppose to be anyone in the audience. A large room with a few camera men and two people debating is unsafe?

  6. Yes Biden cancelled because he can’t debate. Yes Biden will break social norms. But so did Trump break the rules. When Trump follows norms and releases tax returns Biden will follow norms and debate . Till then he can also break norms and won’t debate .

  7. “The inevitable reduction in student attendance in the debate hall, volunteer opportunities and ancillary educational events undermined the primary benefit of hosting — to provide our students with a meaningful opportunity to engage in the American political process,” Jenkins wrote.

In addition to the health of students, Fox said he was concerned about bringing hundreds of people, including campaign staff, security personnel and news media, to town amid the pandemic.

Another factor in the decision, he said, was “the wild card that no one knows: in this political climate, the potential for significant demonstrations or protests, over which there’s very little control.”

University spokesman Paul Browne said it became clear over the past month that physical distancing requirements would have allowed fewer than 100 students to attend — out of a total of 8,500 undergraduates. A watch party at Notre Dame Stadium also would have been canceled.

“The rationale for us to do it went away with the lack of student participation that we had hoped for,” Browne said. “We just became a place as any other place without that student engagement.”
