WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci dismissed a tweet by Donald Trump claiming the U.S. global lead in coronavirus cases is because of increased testing.

Responding to questioning by a House Democrat, Fauci says the scale of the U.S. outbreak is the result of multiple factors, including some states opened too quickly, disregarding federal guidelines. Those recommendations called for a phased approach to easing restrictions on restaurants, bars and gyms based on state case counts.

Trump tweeted as a House oversight committee heard from the nation’s top health officials on the federal response to coronavirus. Rep. James Clyburn, D-South Carolina, chaired the committee hearing.

Fauci’s warnings about the scope and dangers of the outbreak have drawn the ire of some of President Trump’s supporters and prompted calls for his firing. But he’s avoided open confrontations with the White House.

  1. If Trump keeps Fauci, he should stop undermining him. If Trump doesn’t trust Fauci, fire Fauci and replace him. This in-between nonsense of arguing with your own panel of experts does nothing for anyone.

    • In between is precisely what we need . As fauci said he decides health issues and doesn’t issue govt orders . You need a fauci to be overly cautious about health as mine or your dr would be . But then you need a trump Who makes public policy and needs go take into account more than Just the hazards of corona. He needs to think about hazards of never ending lock downs etc. Just like with my dr we don’t follow him to the t bec life gets in the way

  2. Fauci will not be fired, since polls show him with a lot of public support; in fact, Trump mentioned that he was envious of the support that the public has for Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx. Incidentally, for a man who is 79 years old, Fauci is in excellent physical condition, and still runs three miles every day.

  3. If trump wins re-election Fauci is gone. On nov 4. You can take it to the bank. He’s not firing him now because it looks stupid. Once he wins re-election he’s gone.

  4. If there are no tests for cancer, then no one has it, right? This is Trump’s pilpul logic on the deadly Covid-19 epidemic. He deserves your vote just for this nonsense alone.

  5. Let’s see, who do I trust more on Corvid 19?
President Trump, whose degree is in business, or Dr. Fauci, a medical doctor whose specialty is in infectious diseases.
    I pick Dr. Fauci.
