JERUSALEM (VINnews) — After Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced the historic peace agreement with Sudan Saturday night, there have been numerous responses both from the Israeli side and the Sudanese side welcoming the agreement. The Israeli Foreign Ministry’s Arabic social media sites have been flooded with welcoming wishes from thousands of  Sudanese people.

Ahmed wrote: “Welcome from your second homeland. What could be more beautiful than peace? Israel, the land of knowledge and technology, is in our hearts. I extend to you my love from Sudan.”

Arafeh wrote that “I as a Sudanese woman am very happy with the normalization of relations with you and look forward to visiting Israel and getting to know its culture from close.” Another respondent on the site said that “this is the best decision that Sudan took in its entire history.”

Abbas added that “Israel is our sister. I’m waiting for the first direct flight so that I can visit her.”

Not all Sudanese were so positive, some described the peace as “peace on paper” between the leaders, and stated that hostility to Israel would remain a feature in Sudan.

Netanyahu’s speech focused on the benefits which could accrue from peace with Sudan, which had once been a staunch ally of Iran and a hotbed of Islamic terrorism but has recently changed its leadership and is now more attuned to peace. He stated that the benefits were not just in the security arena but also in shortening international flights to Africa and South America which could not previously fly over central Africa.

In a tweet Sunday Netanyahu said that he expected “warm peace” with Sudan, a reference to the cold and unsatisfactory peace which exists between Israel and its other Arab neighbours Egypt and Jordan. Netanyahu added that Israel would provide immediately 5 million dollars of flour as emergency aid to Sudan. The famine-stricken country was also promised 81 million dollars of flour and emergency medical aid by the US and received 67 million tons of flour from the United Arab Emirates as part of the assistance promised by the UAE in the normalization deal with Israel.
