Meet A Rabbi Voting For Biden

QUEENS (JTA) – Rabbi Barry Kornblau, the rabbi of the Young Israel of Hollis Hills in Queens and a previous staff member at the Rabbinical Council of America, will not forget the moment he lost trust in the Trump campaign.

“In 2017, I was sitting in the Indian Treaty Room near the White House, listening to Sebastian Gorka,” recalled Rabbi Kornblau, 55, referring to President Donald Trump’s former deputy assistant. At the time, Kornblau was taking part in a lobbying mission on behalf of the Orthodox Union, the largest Orthodox umbrella group.

While he does not remember exactly what Gorka was speaking about, he remembered “the combination of nationalist fanaticism and charisma” with which the former Trump staffer spoke. “I was appalled that an individual like this was part of the administration of the president of the United States,” said Rabbi Kornblau. “At that moment, I decided I would not engage with this administration. I realized we can’t treat this like normal times.”

Rabbi Kornblau has kept his word. Over the last four years, he has quietly and persistently spoken against Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and the encouragement given to white supremacist groups by the president and his circle.

Last week, the rabbi published an opinion article in the New Jersey Jewish Link titled “Why Orthodox Jews Must Vote for Joe Biden.”

In the lengthy article, he cites Trump’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, saying Trump “turned public health into a partisan issue, called a world-renowned infectious disease expert an ‘idiot,’ and reduced confidence in a vaccine even before it’s been tested.”

He also cited Trump’s character, saying the president’s “unparalleled greed, hedonistic lifestyle, narcissism, dishonesty, abusive behavior, misogyny, and corruption disgrace the office once held by Washington and Lincoln.” The letter cites similar criticism of the president by Rabbi Mosheh Lichtenstein, an influential Modern Orthodox rabbi who lives in Israel.

A notable silence

Kornblau is bucking well-documented trends in the Orthodox Jewish community: According to a survey conducted by the charedi Orthodox Ami Magazine, 83% of Orthodox Jews said they will vote for Trump, compared to just 13% who said they’d support the Democratic Party’s nominee, Joe Biden.

In an American Jewish Committee survey released Oct. 19, Trump is preferred by 74% of Orthodox; that’s a mirror of the 75% of all Jews who support former Vice President Joe Biden and the 22% who favor the incumbent.

Orthodox voters tend to vote hawkishly on Israel and appreciate Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and scuttle the Iran nuclear deal. Trump’s ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, is himself a member of Long Island’s Orthodox community and a prominent supporter of the settlements. Orthodox voters also tend to be conservative on social issues like public funding for private schools, and agree with the law and order rhetoric that Trump has directed at big cities where Orthodox communities tend to cluster.

The coronavirus pandemic, which has hit their communities hard, has also pushed Orthodox voters, especially from the insular haredi camp, into Trump’s arms. This week the president tweeted his thanks for  13 prominent haredi Orthodox rabbis who, back in June, praised Trump for demanding that houses of worship remain open despite the spread of COVID-19. Protests in Orthodox Brooklyn against state and city pandemic restrictions have turned into pro-Trump rallies.

But, according to Rabbi Kornblau, the numbers showing Orthodox support for Trump can be misleading. He said he personally knows of “many” Orthodox leaders, including prominent rabbis, who are deeply critical and fearful of Trump, but are unable to voice their opinions because of communal responsibilities and institutional affiliations.

The notable silence from centrist Orthodox leaders supporting Biden — made only more dramatic by the raucous support of Trump on the right — points to a “fundamental conundrum” of the modern-day rabbinate, he said.

Rabbi Yitzchak Smith, a rabbi and lawyer who has has recently gained a following by promoting the idea there that COVID-19 testing is a government ploy to hurt Orthodox Jews, addressed a rally in support of Donald Trump and religious freedom in Long Island Sunday. (Shira Hanau)

“Ultimately you’re always employed by a community or an institution, and unless you’re willing to risk your job, or at best receive tremendous flak, your hands are tied,” he said. The “potential to alienate members of your own community” is too pronounced for most pulpit rabbis to speak out, he said.

“I think that most pro-Biden Orthodox rabbis are doing the right thing by being quiet, because their primary duty is to their community,” he said. “The silent rabbis aren’t only avoiding problems. They’re doing an affirmative good because their job is to foster shalom, communal harmony. The gap between a leader and his flock can’t be too large, or the flock won’t follow and the leader won’t lead.”

Orthodox communities also have a way of enforcing conformity. Rabbi Kornblau recalled receiving a letter from one Orthodox young woman who said that her match-making prospects have wilted because of her Democratic politics. Others have written to him describing feeling personally and religiously ostracized by the Orthodox world’s seemingly monolithic pro-Trump stance.

“‘It’s hard to be constantly told you’re not a frum Jew if you don’t support Trump,’” quoted Rabbi Kornblau from one message he had received after publishing his op-ed. “‘It would be much easier to leave the frum world.’” (“Frum” is a colloquial term meaning Orthodox or religious.)

“When the majority of community leaders are describing Torah values and Republican political stances together, it makes people, especially young people, wonder how they can stay part of a community like that,” he said. “They’re saying if these are Orthodox values, it would make more sense not to be Orthodox. We are — and will — pay a high price for the gross politicalization of communal life.”

“Can you imagine,” he continued, almost as though speaking to himself. “We’ve reached a point where people are questioning their own religious identity because they don’t agree with the president of the United States — is this really where we are?”

Rabbi Kornblau, who had been reticent to speak to the press, gave an interview to The Jewish Star in March 2019 criticizing the president of the National Council of Young Israel, an umbrella organization for his Modern Orthodox movement, supporting Otzma Yehudit, a far-right, anti-Arab political party in Israel. He was among a small but vocal group of Young Israel rabbis who were critical of the national organization’s right-wing advocacy. The Otzma Yehudit statement was “the final hammer blow, the straw that broke the camel’s back,” told the interviewer.

(NCYI’s president, Farley Weiss, later issued a clarification saying that the statement of support for the party represented his own “personal views and that of many on our board, but may not reflect the view of all of the Young Israel synagogues.”)

Asked why he has been increasingly vocal in the weeks before the election, Rabbi Kornblau cites tradition.

“‘In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man,’” he responded, quoting a famous Mishnaic aphorism by the rabbinic sage Hillel.

The response to his article calling for Orthodox Jews to vote for Biden has been “overwhelming,” said Kornblau. He has been contacted by “countless Orthodox Jews whose personal lives have been damaged because they do not support Trump. Our community will pay a steep price for this,  no matter who wins.”

Yet another Self-serving, arrogant , self righteous, scoundrel. While the Trump administration has been a great friend of the Jews and the Jewish state, it is not without flaw. But who amongst us is? A Biden/Harris administration That will take its marching orders from the Ilhan Omar’s, The AOC’s, the Adam Schiff’s, the Nancy Pelosi’s, and the Jerry Nadler’s, of our once admirable country, would be a disaster for the world, for America, and for the Jews in particular.

While Trump is certainly flawed, the alternative is worse. Biden addressed J Street (the fact that he even addressed them, in itself, disqualifies him from getting any pro-Israel voter) and told them that he will pressure Israel to “return” to the 1967 lines (which Abba Eban called the “Auschwitz lines” and will restore aid to the Palestinian Authority which was cut by Trump so that, in Biden’s words (I heard him say this) the Palestinians will have “leverage” against Israel. Compare this to Trump’s actions on Israel. As flawed as Trump is, there is no choice but to vote for him

I read this article and has no arguments so I read his linked article and it was a typical fake news exposé of a misguided light-onto-nations liberal.

A vote for biden is a vote for the democrats and everything that they stand for: jew hatred, crime, corruption, toeiva, racism, islamism.

This guys a moron, and not Frum at all if he thinks that Biden is better than trump, besides for the fact that many gedolim already said that Trump is the best candidate at this time. I will tell you the reason why I think you are not considered frum, is because trump at this time is has values that are closest to our values in the Torah, you cant deny the facts, he is pro law and order, he’s pro capital punishment, he’s pro Jews in general, I can go on and on. But Biden is not even sane, he’s corrupt, he worked as Vice President under an anti Semite who was helping Iran get weapons to destroy Israel, Democrats have insane laws

I remember R’Kornblau from years ago. In that recollection, I am not surprised by his political preferences or his reaction to Sebastian Gorka. We are not a homogeneous people halachically or politically. I wish him and his congregation good health and hatzlocha in all they do. I hope there are more voters with my preferences than with theirs. I cannot imagine an America under a Biden presidency. Gott zolt helfen.

So he hates Trump, Why does that make BIden a better choice, I havent heard one thing about Biden that makes me want to vote for him. Trump is certainly flawed but his policies have proven themselves. Biden double talks, lies, lives in some fantasy world and Harris is a total danger to society. This Rabbi should follow Rabbi Sach’s advice and stay out of politics.

I wonder if the people commenting here understand that their comments are Exhibit 1 in the case for why it was so important for R. Kornblau to speak out. Imagine the feeling of alienation of going to shul surrounded by people shouting support for the abomination in the White House while mindlessly attacking Democrats as if MAGA was the 11th commandment. At least that person who still remembers a Judaism before it was corrupted by Trumpism can know that they are not alone.

Another modern Orthodox liberal Jew, who is modern first liberal second and maybe Jewish last. He would rather vote for a party whose basic tenets are 180° against Torah values. Ladies and gentlemen, is that is the YI political view. It has nothing to do with the fact that the modern Democrat Party is nowhere related to the Democrat Party of 40 or 50 years ago. Modern day Democrats for all intents and purposes could be called socialists.

His lovely Democrat governors, Andrew’s son of Mario the Cuomo, shut down shuls and they were only able to open again in June when the president threatened a lawsuit for restriction of prayer. That’s your modern Democrat party.

With all due respect Rabbi, when you sleep with the donkeys you will smell like one too.

As Jews, we are supposed to be a light to the nations. The nations of the world are supposed to keep the seven laws of the sons of Noah. A political party that backs immorality, which is against the seven laws and abortion, which is against the seven laws, should not be supported. School children need to be taught belief in G-d and morality – the future of the country and its blessings depend on it. The democratic party is not good for America. In G-d we trust. G-d bless America.

Rabbi Kornblau seems to tell us why he HATES Trump so much and, in very cryptic terms, how Trump got him upset (without any concrete facts etc..) what Mr Kornblau isn’t telling us is, why is he voting for Biden? What virtues does Biden have aside from the fact that he’s running agains President Trump? Honestly? I can’t believe the OU would put up such a moron to represent Jewish values. This article was asinine.

Our “gedolim” like R shmeul or the satmar reba is not scared of “ loosing “ their jobs. Only pulppet young Israel rabbis . They can say what they believe with no fear . So I don’t buy his Torah .
Re Gorka , big deal so he sounds populist . He was never anti frum Torah jews . This rabbi made that up.
All that being said, as I vote for Trump some of his concerns need to bother us all. You need to have more pity on Latino family immigrants . These are poor humans . I don’t buy that they are all being persecuted. I think they come for money like any of us would . But at the end of the day , they are good hard working and you need to have pity on those kids at the border . You also have to have some disdain for trumps lack of tznuis including tznuis of the mouth ( kidushas hapeh) and twitter feed .
We still need to support Trump because of the pandemic. If he wins , he will have our back against evil governor antichos cuomo. And we need to support him for Israel and rubashkin plus our other Jewish needs . They even got us yaNeva esrogim when Italy was closed. Then there is lower taxes, school vouchers , Supreme Court justices more aligned with us etc ..And the war on Islam and isis which he won !
While strongly supporting Trump that doesn’t mean he is g-d and all correct .

The latest ‘frum’ craze: trump idol worship. Check out his statements and re-tweets of sick Qanon and white racist blood libels vs Yidden. Check out pogromist Gorka and his beloved Bannon who works w fascist parties in Europe. Trump is BAD for the Jews and BAD for humanity. Ignoring the quarter million dead is ‘frum’???

Another article where someone is simply looking to idolize a gentile or government agent who is just as ‘nice as I am” or looking for a new pulpit. We do no idolize gentiles and get our moral values from them but rather from the Torah later Poskim. PERIOD. We are told to pray for the success of the government and since we can vote, Vote for those with the best policy. Look at what Biden has done for American and the Jews and Israel for the past 47 years, and look what Trump’s policies have done in 3 1/2 years. (P.S. the cages and illegal immigrant deportation were part of Obama/Biden and democrat policy (until Trump agreed and continued with it…it is the law). And by the way for those who do not let the facts get in the way of the truth, the “bigot racist” Trump has Jewish shomer Shabbat grandchildren whoe Jewish parents who actively support him and unfortunately I believe that his son is also married to a Jewish woman…. One final word: I am thinking that this Rav is spending most of his time learning and guiding his congregation and thus not to politically or policy astute and I would compliment him for this and that is his job…not to give the hopefully more politically informed his political views.

I truly believe that trump is a murderer. By not following the doctors’ advice to social distance and wear masks, he has essentially told America that American lives do not matter. His rallies are a disgrace to our country, reminiscing of other rallies by demagogues. His actions have caused the death of 100,000+ lives.
Murderer, get out of our beloved White House.

The Jewish community the rabbi serves should not renew his contract. It’s clear that the rabbi is narrow minded and only thinking about himself. Although trump is not perfect, he has been the best president the Jewish community in the US and Israel ever had. Biden spoke for the J Street group and said it clearly, he will “force” isreal to accept the two state solution which means giving up on Jerusalem. Force means cutting off funding. Of course J Street loves Biden but this rabbi, why does he?

Unfortunately, being a Democrat is the religion of many Orthodox Jews and for sure the secular left. We as a people, never learn from the past. Voting for Trump is not a religion, it is preserving what America is supposed to be, Free, Constitutional and not beholden to any foreign entity. No one voted for Trump who thinks he is mentch, first, he is a goy, and from a president, all we need living in golus is a partner to Israel, our religious freedoms protected, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights upheld….Biden/Harris, abortion on demand, free speech and Hashem is not in their equation…What Torah values, what hakaras h’tov do we own the demoncrats…….party to the KKK, Segration, Planned Parenthood so black women abort to lessen their population. I daven to Hashem for clarity, many who are pro Biden, remind me of the Jews that went with the Greek values….(sssshhhh don’t object, be quiet fit in, no one will notice us……TELL ME HOW WELL HAS THAT WORKED THUS FAR.
