Satmar Shul To Be Fined $15K for Secret Wedding, Mayor Warns Of Additional Consequences

BROOKLYN (VINnews/JTA) – The Satmar synagogue that hosted a huge wedding in Brooklyn, will be slapped with a $15,000 fine for violation of restrictions aimed at reducing the COVID infection rate, Mayor de Blasio said Monday, the NY Daily News reports.

The Nov. 8 wedding was arranged to avoid detection by secular authorities, according to the New York Post, which first reported about the wedding on Saturday. Photographs published in the Post show Congregation Yetev Lev B’Satmar in Williamsburg packed with guests, in violation of pandemic rules limiting houses of worship to 50% capacity at most, and less in areas with many COVID-19 cases.

“Due to the ongoing situation with government restrictions, preparations were made secretly and discreetly, so as not to draw attention from strangers,” the Satmar newspaper Der Blatt reported, according to the Post’s report.

“We know there was a wedding. We know it was too big. We don’t have an exact figure, but whatever it was, it was too big,” the Mayor said “There appeared to be a real effort to conceal it, which is absolutely unacceptable.”

“There is going to be a summons for $15,000 immediately for that site,” de Blasio said. “And there could be additional consequences quite soon, as well. That’s just not acceptable.”

Is there a legal basis for giving 15k fines based on newspaper reports? When it comes to other matters, this Mayor is very opposed to and dismissive of the more right wing NY Post.

If this happened nearly a month ago, I would be interested to see how many infections resulted from it. If not many, then maybe we need to rethink the whole policy. I am not doubting the sincerity of the governor to try and curb infections but if it really made no difference than we have a perfect experiment to show that we no nothing about how this virus spreads

15k? They should make der blatt pay it.

We all know this is something that they could pay immediately. This is to make the mayor, אזא שוטה, feel good. They should fight it in order to be allowed to give it to a charity.

Pay the fine in pennies but toss in buttons and bottle caps so they can’t use a machine. Or in new dollar bills- the kind that are stuck together.

They should also be forced to pay all the medical bills, funeral bills and be held responsible for every single case that can be traced to said event and any others going forward. This blatant disregard to basic public health guidelines during a pandemic is simply un excusable

This was a predetermined fine; agreed by both parties prior to the wedding to avoid any public fallout of favoritism.

this is no different than the fines imposed on Susan B. Anthony or Martin Luther King for their heroic civil disobedience.

That’s a joke of a fine . Using security cameras , he can see how many people entered , then fine $1,000 per person
