Two Israelis Allowed To Leave Country To Undergo Assisted Suicide In Switzerland

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Despite the total closure on Israel’s borders, with no Israeli citizens allowed to leave the country, there are certain exceptions to the rule. When immediate medical treatment is required abroad or when an Israeli needs to participate in a funeral or take care of a person who requires his services, he may leave the country. Humanitarian reasons can also allow for Israelis to leave the country.

Two Israelis requested that they be allowed to go to Switzerland in order to undergo assisted suicide, which is prohibited by Israeli law. The law does not prevent people going abroad to perform the procedure, but the committee in charge of exceptions did not permit them to leave the country. The two appealed the decision and Minister Tzahi Hanegbi, who heads the appeals committee, permitted them to leave the country for this reason.
