‘A Total Jap’: Asbury Park Press Apologizes For Using Anti-semitic Epithet In Lakewood Nurse Photo Caption

LAKEWOOD (JTA) – A New Jersey newspaper left a photo caption with the term “JAP,” a pejorative for “Jewish American princess,” on its website for over 14 hours.

The caption in the Gannett-owned Asbury Park Press, which went with a photo of a female Orthodox nurse, read: “A f***ing hot nurse, a total JAP, loads a syringe with a dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.” It went with a story about vaccine discrepancies for people of color on the Jersey shore.

Executive Editor Paul D’Ambrosio apologized on Monday, noting that the photo was taken in Lakewood, a large town in central New Jersey with a large haredi Orthodox population.

“As executive editor of the Asbury Park Press, I apologize deeply to women, the Lakewood Jewish community, the Asian American community and all our readers,” D’Ambrosio said. The slang word “Jap,” when not capitalized, can be used as a slur against Japanese people as well.

Along with a string of other prominent local lawmakers, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy sharply condemned the caption.

“It’s unfathomable that someone could have written that, even privately, never mind that it was published,” Murphy said in Monday’s press conference about coronavirus updates.

The “JAP” term originated in the middle part of the 20th century and has been used to slur Jewish women as overly materialistic.

JAP is not the biggest problem with the caption. It is disgusting.

Reminds me of every time a Democrat apologizes for something antisemitic they said. They can’t God forbid only apologize for the antisemitism because Jews are a successful minority and they don’t really matter so they have to make it about someone else also. Like when ilhan Omar said something antisemitic they couldn’t even bring themselves to denounce her or her antisemitism so they decided to denounce all forms of hate or in this case where somehow they decided that it was also against the Japanese people

The only reason they apologized is for the use of jap especially with all the demonstrations against racist attacks on Asians going on now. As for Jews they don’t care

Notice how in trying to distance himself from his scribble-sheet newspaper’s anti-Semitism, the woke editor apologizes first to “women” and only then to the Jewish community.
This is the ethos of the Biden/Harris administration and they cannot escape blame for this kind of despicable behavior.
For the sake of a civilized and caring society lets show wokeism the red card!

The term “Jap” was originally used as a slur against Japanese people. It was commonly used in many newspapers during World War Two. In fact, the New York Daily news would routinely use that term on its headlines (i.e. “Bomb dropped against Japs”).

Why are the words not blurred out? I would not think you would allow this on your site.

Why did D’Ambrosio apologize? This is exactly what the Asbury Park Press thinks of us and what it wants all its readers to think. They will not rest until every Orthodox Jew leaves New Jersey.

By the way, this is the reason Orthodox media refrain from publishing photographs of women. We don’t need people like those who read the Asbury Park Press making scurrilous comments
